Climbing Aktru from Almaty: Routes, Difficulty, Gear, and Real Costs

Climbing Aktru from Almaty is a 5–7-day tour to the Altai Mountains, ascending the peaks of Kyzyl-Tash (3500 m) and Karatash (3300 m). The route is rated 2A–2B, requiring crampons and an ice axe, but is accessible to beginners with a guide. toor organizes such tours with transfer, meals, and gear rental.

Aktru Route Difficulty: Who It Suits and How to Choose

We break down the 2A–2B difficulty rating, peak heights, and participant requirements. We help you understand whether the route matches your fitness level.

The Aktru climb from Almaty is a 2A–2B route suitable for hikers with good physical fitness.

The Aktru route from Almaty takes 5–7 days and includes ascents of Kyzyl-Tash and Karatash peaks.

Difficulty Rating 2A–2B: What It Means for the Hiker

The Aktru route difficulty is rated 2A–2B, requiring crampons and an ice axe, but accessible to beginners with a guide. The 2A–2B rating means the route requires the use of crampons and an ice axe, but does not involve long vertical walls or hard ice sections. In practice, this means snow-and-scree slopes up to 30–35° and short ice crossings on the Maly Aktru glacier — the technique can be learned in a 30-minute briefing before departure. The main challenge is not climbing skills but physical endurance: a daily elevation gain of up to 1000 m starting from base camp at 2200 m stresses the cardiovascular system, which flatland hikers are not used to. For a beginner with good fitness and no fear of heights, this route is doable — the key is to move in a rope team with a guide and not push the pace.

Aktru Peak Heights: Kyzyl-Tash (3500 m) and Karatash (3300 m)

Kyzyl-Tash (3500 m) and Karatash (3300 m) are the two main peaks in this valley, both accessible within a single tour with a daily elevation gain of up to 1000 m. Kyzyl-Tash (“Red Rock”) is the highest point of the route; the ascent to its ridge goes via a scree couloir with a final 100-meter snow slope where crampons are mandatory. Karatash (“Black Rock”) is technically easier — the climb is along a gentle ice tongue of the Maly Aktru glacier without steep sections, suitable for training before ascending the neighboring peak. The 200-meter difference between the peaks is not critical in difficulty, but Kyzyl-Tash offers a more panoramic view of the Maly Aktru glacier and surrounding ridges — if weather and time permit, it is worth including both ascents in the program.

Which Route to Choose for a Beginner: Trekking or Climbing

Aktru trekking from Almaty is an option for those who want to hike through the valley without going onto the glacier. We offer two options: trekking through the Aktru valley without glacier exposure (suitable for beginners) and a classic ascent of the peaks with a 2A–2B rating (requires basic preparation). The trekking route lasts 5–7 days with overnight camping at 2200–2600 m, daily hikes up to 12 km with 400–600 m elevation gain, no crampons or ice axe, walking on traverse trails along the Aktru River. The climbing route is also 5–7 days, but two of them are spent working on the glacier with a full set of technical gear: crampons, ice axe, helmet, harness; the guide provides instruction and monitors every section. If you are unsure of your abilities, start with trekking — it will give you an understanding of altitude and exertion, and you can sign up for the climb next year.

Medical Requirements for the Aktru Climb

Participation in the climb requires no serious heart or blood pressure issues — this is the basic medical requirement for routes up to 3500 m. The altitude of the base camp at 2200 m is already noticeable: on the second or third day, mild headache and shortness of breath during ascent may occur — normal acclimatization that passes within 24–48 hours if you drink at least 2.5 liters of water per day and do not ascend above 2600 m without a rest day. Even with good physical fitness, it is advisable to consult a therapist a month before the tour: a daily elevation gain of up to 1000 m stresses the cardiovascular system, which general endurance cannot compensate for.

Gear for Aktru: Full List and Rental

We break down which gear is mandatory for glacier travel, what camp equipment is available for rent, and what is better to buy in advance. We show where you can save without compromising safety.

Mandatory Glacier Gear: Crampons, Ice Axe, Helmet, Harness

For the Aktru climb, crampons, ice axe, helmet, and harness are mandatory — without them, going onto the Maly Aktru glacier is impossible due to guide safety requirements and the 2A–2B route rules. Crampons need 9–12 mm spikes for ice and firn at 3000–3500 m, the ice axe should be a classic straight (not telescopic), the helmet protects against rockfall on scree sections, and the harness is used to attach to fixed ropes when crossing crevasses. At toor, these four items are included in the basic rental package from 5000 KZT for the entire hike, so buying them for a single climb is unnecessary — just order them when booking the tour.

Camp Gear: Tent, Sleeping Bag, Gas Stove

In our tours, accommodation is in tents at the base camp at 2200 m; tents and sleeping bags are provided for rent, and the gas stove is shared by the group for cooking and boiling water. The tents are three-season, designed for winds up to 20 m/s and precipitation; sleeping bags have a comfort temperature down to -5°C, covering nighttime frosts at the campsite. Bringing your own sleeping bag is not necessary, but if you have a lightweight, warm one (comfort down to -5°C), it will be more comfortable than the standard one — nighttime temperatures at camp drop below freezing, and the standard bag may be too tight for tall people.

What to Bring: Clothing, Footwear, First Aid Kit

  • Trekking boots: stiff sole with tread for scree and ice sections, high lacing to secure the ankle — sneakers are not suitable.
  • Thermal underwear and fleece: the first layer wicks moisture, the second retains heat; only this works on the climb — cotton under a jacket gets wet and cools you down.
  • Windproof jacket and raincoat: on ridges, wind can reach 15–20 m/s, a membrane protects against wind, a raincoat against sudden downpours in the valley.
  • Sunglasses and SPF 50+ sunscreen: on the glacier, reflected UV burns in 20 minutes; sunglasses are mandatory — without them, snow blindness.
  • Personal first aid kit: plasters, bandage, painkillers, motion sickness pills for the 10-hour transfer — the rest is in the guide's group first aid kit.

If you plan to climb Belukha or Talgar in the future, it is better to buy crampons and an ice axe right away — they will be useful on routes of the same 2A–2B category and will pay off in 2–3 seasons.

Acclimatization on Aktru: Schedule and Common Mistakes

We break down how to properly gain altitude in this area to avoid altitude sickness. We provide a step-by-step acclimatization schedule and analyze common mistakes even experienced hikers make.

Acclimatization Schedule: How to Gain Altitude Safely

In our tours, acclimatization follows the “climb — rest — climb” principle: day one — base camp at 2200 m, day two — a radial hike to 2800 m and return to camp for the night, day three — ascent to Kyzyl-Tash (3500 m). This approach gives the body time to produce red blood cells and adapt to thin air. A rest day at camp is mandatory between the hike and the ascent — no active exertion, only light walks in the valley. In practice, it looks like this: day 1 — arrival and camp setup, day 2 — walk to the Maly Aktru glacier (2600 m), day 3 — rest, day 4 — ascent to Kyzyl-Tash. The key rule is not to gain more than 1000 m of elevation per day and always sleep 500–700 m below the previous day's maximum ascent point to allow the body to adapt.

Altitude Sickness Symptoms: When to Stop

Mild altitude sickness symptoms — headache, nausea, shortness of breath — begin at 2500–3000 m; if they do not subside after 20–30 minutes of rest in the shade with plenty of fluids, you need to descend 500 m. At 3000–3500 m, insomnia, loss of appetite, and rapid heartbeat even at rest may occur — a sign that acclimatization is going poorly. In such cases, the guide recommends taking ibuprofen for headache and Diamox (acetazolamide) as prescribed by a doctor before the hike. On Aktru, the most insidious mistake is to endure a headache and continue climbing: this can lead to pulmonary edema, requiring immediate evacuation. At the first signs — stop and rest.

Physical Training One Month Before the Climb

One month before the climb, 3–4 workouts per week are sufficient: running 5–8 km, squats with a 10–15 kg backpack, and stair climbing for 30–40 minutes. Add balance exercises — lunges and calf raises — they strengthen the ankles, which are heavily loaded on the rocky trails of Aktru. Cardio training (running, cycling, swimming) is more important than strength: at altitude, heart rate jumps 20–30 beats per minute higher than at sea level, and the heart must be ready for this workload. The most important thing is to strengthen legs and back: on the route, you will carry a 10–15 kg backpack with up to 1000 m elevation gain per day, and weak muscles will lead to rapid fatigue and risk of injury.

Common Acclimatization Mistakes on Aktru

  • Ignoring a headache: trying to “tough it out” and continue climbing is a direct path to pulmonary edema; at the first symptoms, stop for 30 minutes with plenty of fluids.
  • Neglecting water intake: at 3000–3500 m, the body needs 3–4 liters of water per day; dehydration worsens altitude sickness by 2–3 times.
  • Too rapid elevation gain: climbing more than 1000 m per day without an overnight at an intermediate altitude guarantees a headache and disrupts the group's schedule.
  • Skipping rest days: missing an acclimatization day to climb early reduces success chances by 40–50% according to local mountain guide statistics.
  • Hiding symptoms from the guide: in our tours, the guide monitors each participant's condition and adjusts the pace — if you feel unwell, tell them immediately, do not wait until it becomes critical.

Glacier Safety: Roping, Crevasses, Self-Rescue

We break down key safety rules on the Maly Aktru glacier: roping up, identifying crevasses, and basic self-rescue techniques. The Aktru glacier tour includes moving in rope teams through areas of hidden crevasses.

Roping Up: Why and How to Do It Properly

On the Maly Aktru glacier, all participants in our tour move in rope teams of 2–3 people with an 8–10 meter interval — this is the only safe way to cross areas of hidden crevasses. The rope is attached to each person's harness via a carabiner, and if one falls, their weight is slowed by the rope's friction on snow and ice — crevasses on Aktru reach depths of 10–20 meters, and without a rope team, the outcome is almost certainly traumatic. If a participant falls, the second person must immediately drop to the snow and brake with the ice axe: this technique is practiced during the briefing before going onto the ice, and without it, the chance of holding a partner on the rope drops to zero.

How to Identify a Crevasse on the Glacier

Crevasses on the glacier are often hidden under snow bridges — they are indicated by slight depressions, changes in snow color, or a hollow sound when stepping. On Maly Aktru, the most dangerous areas are terrain breaks and glacier confluence points: in sunny weather, a slight depression forms over a crevasse due to snow settling; in cloudy weather, a difference in white shade is noticeable. Even if a crevasse seems narrow (up to 1 m), it can be 10–20 meters deep — jumping over it without a rope is deadly, so always probe the snow bridge with an ice axe before stepping.

Basic Self-Rescue Techniques: Ice Axe and Belay

The primary self-rescue technique on the glacier is self-arrest with the ice axe: when falling, you must roll onto your stomach, drive the pick into the ice, and press your body weight to stop the slide. On Aktru, slopes reach 30–40 degrees, and without this technique, acceleration makes stopping with feet or hands impossible — only the ice axe provides enough friction. The second critical skill is setting up a belay by driving the ice axe into the ice at a 70-degree angle: it can withstand a pull of up to 500 kg and allows securing the rope to haul out a fallen climber. In our tours, this technique is practiced on a snow slope on the first day — in 15 minutes of training, you will learn a skill that can save your life, even if you have never held an ice axe.

The Guide's Role in Safety on the Route

The Aktru climb guide leads the route safely and teaches how to use crampons and an ice axe. In our tours, one certified guide is assigned to every 4 participants — they assess the glacier condition, choose a safe route, and monitor roped movement. At 3000 m, it is almost impossible to independently assess the risk of rockfall or sudden visibility deterioration without years of mountain experience. Therefore, the guide decides to turn back if weather or participant health deteriorates — this is the main reason why beginners should not go to Aktru without professional accompaniment.

Actual Costs of the Climb from Almaty: Prices and Hidden Fees

We break down the cost of the Aktru climb in detail: what is included in the tour price, what expenses are inevitable, and what you can actually save on.

Tour Price for Aktru from toor: From 3263 KZT to 167983 KZT

The Aktru hike price depends on duration and group size. The Aktru climb from us costs from 3263 KZT for a one-day trek to 167983 KZT for a full multi-day tour with ascents of Kyzyl-Tash and Karatash peaks. The duration of such programs is 5–7 days, including two days for acclimatization at 2200 m in base camp and one reserve day in case of bad weather on the glacier. The price already includes transfer (10 hours one way), three meals a day at camp and snacks on the trail, the work of a certified guide (one per 4 participants), and rental of basic equipment — tent, sleeping bag, mat, gas stove. The price depends on duration and group size: for groups of 4 or more, a 5% discount applies, reducing the total to 159584 KZT per person — this composition gives maximum savings without sacrificing service quality.

What Is Included in the toor Tour Price

  • Transfer: minibus to base camp (10 hours) and back — included with no extra charges for fuel or vehicle wear.
  • Meals: three hot meals at camp (porridge, soups, meat, tea) and dry rations on the trail (nuts, chocolate, bars) — all included in the tour.
  • Certified guide: an instructor with mountaineering training and a first aid kit — one per 4 people, provides training on using crampons and ice axe before going onto the ice.
  • Basic equipment: tent, sleeping bag, mat, gas stove with canisters — rental for the entire tour; your personal gear (crampons, ice axe, helmet) is paid separately from 5000 KZT per set.

Hidden Fees: What to Budget Extra

The main hidden costs for the Aktru climb are mountain insurance (from 5000 KZT to 10000 KZT depending on coverage), meals at cafes along the way (about 3000–5000 KZT per person for stops there and back), and tips for the guide (optional, usually 10–15% of the tour cost, i.e., 10000–15000 KZT). With us, all options are transparent at booking — we recommend budgeting an additional 10000–15000 KZT for unforeseen expenses: for example, repairing a broken crampon strap in the village of Aktash or renting trekking poles if you forgot yours at home. Without this reserve, you risk finding yourself in a situation where you urgently need 3000 KZT for gear repair 100 km from the nearest ATM.

Table: Full Cost Estimate for the Aktru Climb

The most significant savings are personal gear rental (5000 KZT per set instead of buying crampons for 25000–40000 KZT and an ice axe for 15000–25000 KZT) and the group discount of 5%, which with a company of 4 saves 8399 KZT per person.

Route Comparison: Aktru vs. Belukha vs. Talgar

We compare three popular routes for hikes from Almaty: Aktru, Belukha, and Talgar. We help you choose based on your fitness level, budget, and time.

Aktru vs. Belukha: What to Choose for a Beginner

Aktru (category 2A–2B, altitude up to 3500 m) is significantly easier than Belukha (category 3A, altitude 4506 m) — a beginner with good fitness can realistically complete it, whereas Belukha requires mountaineering experience and acclimatization above 4000 m. The Aktru route from Almaty takes 5–7 days versus 10–14 for Belukha, and the tour cost is half — from 120,000 KZT versus 250,000 KZT. Moreover, on Aktru, the ice sections are gentle, and moving in crampons is learned in one day of training on the Maly Aktru glacier, while Belukha has steep ice slopes up to 40°, requiring confident ice axe and rope work. If your goal is a first glacier climb, Aktru is suitable: it is shorter, cheaper, and does not require prior experience with crampons and ice axe — our certified guide will teach you everything on site.

Aktru vs. Talgar: Which Is Closer and More Accessible

Talgar (category 2B–3A, altitude 4979 m) is located in Kazakhstan, closer to Almaty (transfer 2–3 hours), but technically more difficult than Aktru due to higher altitude and steeper ice sections. Aktru has a daily elevation gain of up to 1000 m with comfortable adaptation at base camp at 2200 m, while Talgar starts at 3000 m, immediately stressing the body — the risk of altitude sickness is higher, and the tour price is from 180,000 KZT excluding transport and meals versus 120,000 KZT with transfer and three meals at camp for Aktru. For a beginner, Aktru is preferable: the gradual elevation gain of up to 1000 m per day is gentler, and base camp at 2200 m provides comfortable adaptation — on Talgar, starting at 3000 m immediately stresses the body, and with poor acclimatization, the descent takes the same 7–10 days as a full hike.

Conclusion

We summarize: what you need to know before the climb to choose the right route, pack gear, and avoid overpaying.

Key Takeaways

  • Season from July to August — this is the peak of stable weather in the area, when snow on the route is minimal and rockfall risk is reduced. The Aktru climb 2026 is scheduled for July and August — the peak of stable weather on the route.
  • Plan a budget of 120,000–180,000 KZT — this includes the guide, transfer, accommodation at base camp, and basic gear rental; additional expenses are insurance and personal gear.
  • Start acclimatization 2–3 days before the start — spend time at 2000–2500 m to allow your body to adapt to thin air and reduce the risk of altitude sickness.
  • Do not skimp on the guide — a certified guide will not only lead you on a safe route but also teach you how to use crampons and an ice axe, which is critical on ice sections.
  • Check your insurance — standard medical insurance does not cover high-altitude climbs; take out specialized mountaineering insurance with helicopter evacuation coverage.
