At toor, we organize tours to Katon-Karagay from Almaty with direct transfer (800 km, 10 hours), local guides, and free equipment. Prices range from 3,263 KZT per day to 167,983 KZT for 7 days. Season: May–October, best months are July–August. Groups up to 12 people, age from 10 years old.
Let's break down what makes up the price of a trip to Katon-Karagay from Almaty, why the range is so wide — from 3,263 to 167,983 KZT — and how you can save without losing quality. We organize tours to Katon-Karagay from Almaty with direct transfer, local guides, and free equipment. Tours to Katon-Karagay have prices from 3,263 KZT per day to 167,983 KZT for 7 days depending on duration and group composition.
The price of a trip to Katon-Karagay from Almaty consists of five components: transfer (800 km, 10 hours), local guide services, accommodation (tents / guesthouses / recreation centers), meals (campfire or cafe), and insurance. Equipment — tents, sleeping bags, mats, burners — is provided free of charge. The border zone permit is arranged 2 weeks in advance, and its cost is already included. The most significant component is the transfer: 800 km one way is about 80 liters of fuel for an SUV. Therefore, short trips of 1-2 days cost more per day than 5-7 day trips because logistics are spread over more days.
| Tour duration | Price per person (KZT) | What's included | Additional activities |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 day | from 3,263 | Transfer, guide, campfire lunch, insurance | None |
| 2-3 days (weekend) | from 48,500 | Transfer, guide, tents/guesthouse, meals, insurance | Fishing, banya |
| 5 days | from 89,700 | Transfer, guide, accommodation, meals, insurance, equipment | Fishing, horseback riding, banya |
| 7 days | from 167,983 | Full package + permit, insurance, all equipment | Fishing, horseback riding, banya, climbing |
The difference between the 1-day and 7-day options is not just in days: longer trips include additional activities (fishing, banya, horseback riding) that don't fit into short ones.
The easiest way to save is to gather a group: the price per person in a group of 12 participants is 30-40% lower than in an individual option. The second option is to book in advance, 3-4 weeks ahead: we fix the price at the time of booking, and during peak season (July–August) the cost rises. We do not recommend saving on a guide or insurance — this directly affects safety. But you can bring your own sleeping bag if you have one: this reduces the weight of equipment in the car, but does not affect the price — we still provide the kit for free.
The distance from Almaty to Katon-Karagay is 800 km, about 10 hours by road. Let's look at three ways to get there: with a tour, by your own car, and by train.
The transfer from Almaty to Katon-Karagay is included in the trip cost. We depart at 6 AM from the office, the journey takes about 10 hours with two stops — for lunch at a cafe and a photo at the pass. We travel in prepared SUVs like Toyota Land Cruiser 200 or similar, up to 4 people per car so everyone has enough space for backpacks. The route passes through Ust-Kamenogorsk (200 km from the park) and Ridder (150 km) — along the way, the steppe gives way to the foothills of the Altai, which is already part of the experience. The driver-guide tells about the region, shows where marals and golden eagles live, so time flies by. It is during the transfer that tourists first see the Bukhtarma Reservoir — I recommend sitting on the right side of the vehicle, from where a 30 km panorama opens up.
You can get to Katon-Karagay by your own car — the Almaty — Ust-Kamenogorsk — Ridder — Katon-Karagay road is fully asphalted except for the last 30 km of dirt road from the village to the cordon. Katon-Karagay from Almaty by car is an option for those ready for an 800 km road and obtaining a border zone permit. But there are nuances: you need a border zone permit (processed 2 weeks in advance through the border service in Ust-Kamenogorsk), and inside the park, roads to Lake Yazevoe and Rakhmanovskie Klyuchi are only for SUVs with a ground clearance of at least 200 mm. Many tourists arrive in sedans and then cannot get to the main points — they get stuck at crossings over the Bukhtarma River. If you go by your own car, either take a prepared SUV or plan a route only to accessible locations: Katon-Karagay cordon, the museum in the village, and walking trips along the valley.
An alternative is the train Almaty — Ust-Kamenogorsk (about 12 hours, third class from 3,000 KZT), and from there a taxi or bus to Katon-Karagay (another 3-4 hours, taxi about 15,000 KZT). But there is a problem: schedule connections — the train arrives in Ust-Kamenogorsk in the morning, and the scheduled bus to Katon-Karagay runs once a day at 2 PM, so you'll have to wait 4-5 hours at the station. Taking the train makes sense if you want to save on an overnight stay on the road and don't mind losing a day on the transfer. For a 3-5 day trip, the train is an unnecessary logistical headache: you spend almost a day traveling there and a day back, instead of spending that time on the route.
Katon-Karagay National Park covers 643,477 hectares with Lake Yazevoe, Bukhtarma Reservoir, Rakhmanovskie Klyuchi, and Mount Belukha. We'll tell you about five routes of varying difficulty and duration.
Excursions to Katon-Karagay from Almaty include visits to Lake Yazevoe, Bukhtarma Reservoir, and Rakhmanovskie Klyuchi.
Active recreation in Katon-Karagay offers something for every taste — from walking trips to category climbs.
The route to Lake Yazevoe is the most popular among beginners: 1-2 days, an 8 km one-way hike without a backpack (luggage is carried by car). The lake is at an altitude of 1,800 m, the water is turquoise, surrounded by cedar forest, overnight in tents on the shore with a banya and fish soup from fresh catch — the elevation gain is only 200 m, the route requires no special training, suitable for families with children from 10 years old. Lake Yazevoe is one of the few places in the park where you can swim: the water warms up to +18°C in July–August, while in mountain rivers the temperature rarely rises above +10°C, so bring a swimsuit.
A trip to the Bukhtarma Reservoir is 2-3 days with a focus on fishing: here you can catch grayling, pike, perch, and Siberian taimen. The route is combined — part by SUV, part on foot along the shore, overnight in a guesthouse or tents with fish soup and fried fish straight from the catch; the reservoir is 425 km long, with depths reaching up to 80 m in some places. Fishing is good in May–June and September, while in July–August the bite is weaker due to heat — we don't provide tackle, but we advise what to bring: a spinning rod with a test up to 30 g and a set of spoons.
A journey to Rakhmanovskie Klyuchi is 3-4 days, moderate difficulty: a 15 km hike with an elevation gain of 600 m. The main goal is the thermal springs with water temperatures of +38°C year-round; the recreation center has wooden cabins for 4-6 people and a banya. The water contains silicon, fluorine, and radon in microdoses — locals come here to treat joints and skin. In July–August, the base is crowded, so it's better to book 2-3 weeks in advance: there may be no vacancies.
Climbing to the foot of Mount Belukha (4,506 m) is the most difficult route, 5-7 days, difficulty category 1B. Requires backpacking experience and good physical fitness: minimum backpack weight is 15 kg, the route passes through glaciers and moraines with overnight stays in tents at altitudes up to 3,000 m, and at night the temperature drops to +5°C even in July. Belukha is the highest point of the Altai and a sacred mountain for local peoples; Buddhists consider it the abode of gods, so even approaching the foot is a serious adventure. We recommend taking this route only after 2-3 moderate-difficulty hikes.
| Route | Duration | Difficulty | Price per person (KZT) | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lake Yazevoe | 1-2 days | Easy (walk) | from 3,263 (1 day) | Beginners, families with children from 10 years |
| Bukhtarma Reservoir | 2-3 days | Easy-moderate | from 48,500 | Anglers, water excursion lovers |
| Rakhmanovskie Klyuchi | 3-4 days | Moderate | from 65,000 | Tourists with some experience, thermal spring lovers |
| Combined (jeep + hiking) | 4-5 days | Moderate | from 89,700 | Those who want to see the maximum without overexertion |
| Mount Belukha (foothills) | 5-7 days | High (1B) | from 167,983 | Experienced tourists with good physical fitness |
If you are unsure about your preparation, choose the combined option (jeep + hiking): part of the route you travel by car, part you walk — this reduces the load but gives a full experience of exploring the park.
The climate of Katon-Karagay is sharply continental: +25°C during the day, +10°C at night, with possible rain and wind. Let's break down what is provided free of charge on hikes and what you need to bring with you. Hikes in Katon-Karagay require proper gear due to the sharply continental climate.
Basic equipment — three-person tents with a rainfly, sleeping bags with a comfort rating of +5°C, 8 mm thick foam pads, and Kovea gas burners with 220 g canisters — is provided free of charge. You receive the kit before departure and return it after the route at no extra cost. However, the sleeping bags are rated for +5°C, but in Katon-Karagay in May or September, nighttime temperatures can drop to 0°C — if you go in the off-season, bring your own warm sleeping bag or thermal underwear; it will be comfortable on top of ours. Our burners use a propane-butane mixture, which loses pressure at subzero temperatures — in cold weather above 2,000 m, it's better to bring a gasoline burner, as it is more reliable.
The most common mistake is improper footwear: in sneakers on wet grass or rocks, you can easily slip, and wet feet guarantee blisters by the end of the first day of the route.
The group first aid kit includes bandages, plasters, antiseptic, pain relievers, allergy and stomach upset remedies. Accident insurance with emergency evacuation by ATV or horse is included in the cost of most routes. You need to bring your own personal medications — there are no pharmacies in Katon-Karagay; the nearest medical center is in the village of Katon-Karagay (30-50 km from the routes), so put any chronic medication or motion sickness remedy (the road is 10 hours) in your backpack right away. Wet wipes and antibacterial gel will come in handy: there is nowhere to wash your hands after lunch on the grass, and hygiene on a hike is the basis of health; neglecting it leads to intestinal disorders on the second or third day.
Katon-Karagay is wild nature, mountains, and a border zone. Let's look at three key safety issues: the permit, communication, and behavior on the route.
Yes, to visit Katon-Karagay National Park, you need a border zone permit — the park borders Russia and China. The permit is processed 2 weeks before the trip, it is included in the cost and requires no action from you: we only need copies of all participants' IDs. If you go independently, submit an application through eGov.kz or at the border service — at least 20 working days in advance. Without a permit, you will not be allowed through the checkpoint at the park entrance, and the fine for its absence is from 50 MCI (about 184,600 KZT in the current year). In my opinion, it is easier to entrust the arrangement to a tour operator: independent submission via eGov.kz often stalls if there is an error in the passport series — you'll have to resubmit, losing a week.
In Katon-Karagay, cellular service (Kcell, Beeline, Tele2) is only available in villages and on some heights, while on the routes — especially in gorges and near Lake Yazevoe — there is none. Each guide carries a satellite phone for emergency communication, and before setting out on the route, we report coordinates and return time to the office in Almaty. If you go independently, download offline maps (Maps.me or 2GIS) in advance — there is no mobile internet in the park. And be sure to inform your relatives about the route and approximate return time. Moreover, in an emergency, climb to the nearest high point: there may be a signal sufficient to send an SMS — voice calls still won't go through.
In Katon-Karagay, snow leopards, argali, golden eagles, and marals live — but encounters with them are rare; travelers more often see marals and roe deer. The main rule: do not approach animals, do not feed them, and do not make sudden movements. If you meet a bear (they also live in the park) — do not run, slowly retreat backwards without turning your back. The local guides hired by toor know animal behavior and warn the group if they see tracks: marals are active at dawn and dusk, snow leopards come out at twilight and almost never show themselves to people, and golden eagles can be seen soaring over the cliffs — this is safe and beautiful. Because animals are accustomed to the routes, garbage and food at campsites attract roe deer and marals — pack leftover food in dry bags and hang them on a tree 3-4 meters above the ground.
The season in Katon-Karagay lasts from May to October, but the weather, traffic, and nature change dramatically from month to month. Let's look at which period suits your goals: from photo hunting to fishing. Recreation in Katon-Karagay is possible from May to October, but each month differs in weather and tourist numbers.
We recommend May–June for those who want to see maximum greenery and full-flowing waterfalls after snowmelt and avoid crowds: daytime temperatures +15..+20°C, nighttime +5..+10°C, prices at the beginning of the season are 15-20% lower than peak. In May, snowdrops and kandyk bloom on the slopes; in June, alpine meadows are covered with a carpet of poppies and gentians — this is the best time for landscape photography, when snowy caps on the peaks contrast with green slopes, and you meet no more than 5-7 tourists per day on the routes. The downside is possible prolonged rains and mud on the roads to the Bukhtarma Reservoir and Rakhmanovskie Klyuchi, so for a trip in an ordinary sedan, choose June when the dirt roads dry out.
July–August are the best months to go to Katon-Karagay: daytime temperatures consistently +25°C, nighttime +10°C, rain is rare, the water in Lake Yazevoe warms up to +18°C, and you can swim after a day's hike. These months account for 60% of all bookings — groups fill up 3-4 weeks before the date, especially for routes to Mount Belukha and the Ukok Plateau. During the peak season, on popular trails (Lake Yazevoe, the foot of Belukha), you may encounter up to 20-30 tourists per day — if you want solitude, choose radial routes into the Bukhtarma River valley or the Ukok Plateau, where there are far fewer people, and the landscapes are no less impressive than the main points.
September is the velvet season in Katon-Karagay: daytime +15..+20°C, nighttime +5°C, birch and aspen forests turn golden, lingonberries and sea buckthorn ripen, and this month sees the peak of photo tours and mushroom picking trips. October is already cold (+5..+10°C during the day, frosts down to -5°C at night) — this time is ideal for hunting with a license for maral during the rut and observing the "maral roar": in late September – early October, males emit powerful trumpet sounds to attract females, and this spectacle is only available during this short two-week period. A license is required for hunting, which is arranged in advance — without it, entry into the park's hunting grounds is prohibited, and fines for poaching reach 500 MCI.
Katon-Karagay is suitable for families with children and beginners — the main thing is to choose the right route. Let's look at which programs are safe and interesting for different categories.
Yes, families with children from 10 years old travel to Katon-Karagay — for them, routes have been developed with radial hikes to Kokkol Waterfall and Lake Yazevoe, overnight stays in guesthouses (not in tents), and daily hikes of 8-10 km with a backpack of 5-7 kg on equipped trails that guides check for water levels after rain. The program includes 2-3 hours of free time daily for berry picking, watching marmots, and swimming — children aged 10-12 perceive nature more effectively through interactive activities than through lectures about the park's flora and fauna. The guide always has a first aid kit and a satellite phone: in the Kokkol gorges, cellular service disappears, and without a satellite phone, going on radial hikes with children is dangerous even with a good forecast — the terrain blocks the signal from towers at 1,800 m.
Beginners are offered a basic route "Katon-Karagay in 3 days": transfer from Almaty, accommodation in a guesthouse, radial hikes to Lake Yazevoe and Kokkol Waterfall, meals and guide included, equipment (backpack, sleeping bag, mat) provided free of charge, price from 120,000 KZT per person. The main mistake beginners make is choosing too long a route: for the first time, 2-3 days with one overnight in a guesthouse is optimal to assess your strength and not overload the body with acclimatization at altitudes of 1,500-2,000 m. After such a trip, 80% of beginners return for more challenging routes — to Rakhmanovskie Klyuchi or the foot of Belukha — so it's better to start with a short and comfortable option rather than a five-day hike with tents. A Katon-Karagay weekend tour is the optimal format for a first introduction to the park.
In Katon-Karagay, there are guesthouses (from 15,000 KZT/night), recreation centers (from 25,000 KZT/night), and campsites (free but without amenities) — they include accommodation in verified guesthouses with a wood-fired banya, shower, and three meals a day, and for tent hikes, they book equipped campsites with a toilet and fire pit. The best guesthouses are in the villages of Uryl and the district center: they have banyas, Russian cuisine, and the opportunity to order horseback rides. Accommodation for July–August should be booked 2-3 weeks in advance — this is done for all tourists in advance, but if you plan independently, there will be almost no vacancies left, especially in Uryl with its wood-fired banyas and views of the Bukhtarma Reservoir.
We've gathered the main points to remember when planning a trip to the national park — from logistics to budget and equipment. Tours to Eastern Kazakhstan include Katon-Karagay National Park as one of the key points of the route.
Reviews
The tour to Katon-Karagay with Aidos was super! Lake Yazovoye is just turquoise, water crystal clear. The road was a bit bumpy, but worth it.
We went to Kokkol waterfall, it was beautiful. The organization was a bit off; we left an hour late, but the guide Dinara smoothed things over.
I took a long time choosing a tour and didn't regret it. Katon-Karagay impressed me: Berel Scythian burial mounds, mountain rivers. Guide Marat told a lot of interesting things. The only thing — there was a queue for the cable car, but that's minor.
Vot eto puteshestvie! Priroda prosto skazka. Ozero Yazevoe, Kokkol', kurgany - vse v odnom ture. Spasibo Olegu za otlichnuyu kompaniyu
We had a nice family vacation. Guide Zhanna was very attentive, and the kids found it interesting. The downside was that the bus air conditioning didn't work well.
Katon-Karagay is amazing! Kokkol Waterfall, Berel mounds - we liked everything. Our guide Timur is a great person.

Sorry for typos, I'm writing from my phone. The tour was great! Wild nature, mountains, rivers. Guide Oleg told us about the Scythian burial mounds so engagingly that I forgot about everything.
We searched for a tour with kids for a long time and chose this one. No regrets. Dinara suggested an adapted program, the kids loved Yazevoye Lake. The departure was slightly delayed, but it's forgivable.
Everything was great, but we would have liked more time at the lake. The organization was good, and our guide Zhanna was very responsive.

Katon-Karagai is a beautiful place. The guide Aidos is a professional. But the bus broke down on the way, so we were delayed a bit.
The tour exceeded expectations. The nature is pristine, the air is clean. Guide Timur gave an excellent tour of the Berel mounds. Downside: dinner was cold, but it's a minor issue.
We chose the tour because of the reviews. They didn't lie: Yazevoye Lake looks just like in the pictures. Guide Aliya is super. The road is long but the views are worth it.
Otlichnyy tur! Oleg gid prosto ogon'. Vse organizovano, no hotelos' by bol'she svobodnogo vremeni
Everything was good, but the price is steep. For that money, they could have provided better food. However, the nature is gorgeous, and guide Marat tried his best.
Katon-Karagay is love. Lake Yazovoye, Kokkol waterfall, Saka burial mounds—I'll definitely come back. Guide Dinara gave us unforgettable emotions. Thank you so much.
We went as a group, everyone was happy. Guide Oleg planned the route so we saw the maximum. The weather let us down a bit, but that's not counted.

The tour choice was spontaneous but very successful. Katon-Karagay impressed with its wild beauty. Special thanks to guide Timur for his patience and great attitude.
I went with my friend. All pros: nature, fresh air, interesting excursions. Guide Aliya created a cozy atmosphere. The only downside was the noisy hotel.

The tour was well-organized, but there wasn't enough time for photos. The nature is incredible: turquoise water, mountain rivers. Guide Marat did everything to make us happy.
We were with the kids. The nature is amazing! The Berel mounds were impressive. Thanks to guide Zhanna. One downside - we spent a lot of time on the road.
