Bike tours from Almaty: 7 routes for all skill levels from toor

TB
Author: Timur Beketov
Guide to Multi-Day Tours
Published: Updated: 14 min read

At toor, we organize bike tours from Almaty for all levels—from easy 20 km rides through gorges to challenging 80 km routes with elevation gains up to 1000 meters. The price includes a mountain bike (Cannondale or Merida), helmet, gloves, hydration pack, insurance, and transfer from the city center.

How to Choose a Bike Tour for Your Fitness Level

The main question for beginners is, "Can I handle it?" Bike tours from Almaty by toor suit any level—from novices to experienced riders. We break down three difficulty levels for cycling trips around the area so everyone can pick a route matching their fitness and experience.

Easy Level: 20-30 km without Climbs

For beginners, we offer easy routes of 20-30 km on dirt roads and asphalt with no significant climbs—the perfect format for a first mountain ride. Beginner bike rides in Almaty last 4-5 hours with stops at viewpoints. The distance is covered in 4-5 hours with stops at viewpoints, and the elevation gain does not exceed 150-200 meters, comparable to a walk in the Botanical Garden. Paved sections alternate with compacted dirt, so any mountain bike with front suspension works—Cannondale Trail or Merida Big Nine are provided free of charge. Guide Timur Beketov maintains a pace of 8-12 km/h and takes a break every 20 minutes to keep the group together. On such routes, you get used to handling a mountain bike on rough terrain, and the guide adjusts your posture and gives tips on reading the ground on descents.

Intermediate Level: 30-50 km with Climbs up to 500 m

For those confident in the saddle, we have designed intermediate routes—30-50 km with elevation gains up to 500 meters on singletracks and forest roads of the Ile-Alatau. A typical ride goes through the Almasay or Turgen gorges, where dirt switchbacks alternate with rocky trails along mountain rivers, and average speed drops to 6-8 km/h on climbs. At this stage, proper technique is crucial: on steep sections, the guide recommends slowing down in advance and shifting to a low gear to avoid losing balance on rocky terrain. Groups of up to 12 people have one guide per six participants—he provides support on descents and suggests lines through corners. Proper energy distribution on climbs reduces fatigue by 20-30%: experienced guides advise when to shift gears and breathing techniques to maintain pace.

Advanced Level: 50-80 km with Climbs up to 1000 m

Experienced riders choose advanced routes—50-80 km with elevation gains up to 1000 meters and a maximum altitude of 3000 meters above sea level. Rides go through the high-altitude passes of Kok-Zhaylyau and Zhosaly-Kezen, where the surface consists of large rocks, grass, and scree, and some sections require carrying the bike due to steep slopes. The average tour duration is 6-8 hours with a lunch break at altitude, where temperatures are 10-15°C lower than in the city, so a windbreaker is a must in your backpack. A support vehicle travels parallel to the route on dirt roads, carrying spare wheels, tools, and a first aid kit—technical support is available throughout the ride. At 3000 m, the air is 30% thinner than at sea level, so it's recommended to spend the night before the tour in the city for acclimatization—this lowers your heart rate on climbs and improves endurance.

In May, it's already +30°C at Charyn Canyon, while snow still lies at Kok-Zhaylyau Pass—choose your route not only by difficulty but also by weather.

Cost of Bike Tours: What's Included and What's Extra

The price of a trip often seems like a "black box"—unclear what's included and what you'll have to pay extra for. Bike tours in Almaty from toor include transfer, equipment, and insurance—no hidden fees. We break down the full cost and composition of each format.

Toor Bike Tour Prices: From 3,263 KZT per Day

One-day tours start at 3,263 KZT per person—this price already includes the bike, equipment, insurance, and transfer. Multi-day formats of 2-3 days cost from 18,900 KZT, and extended week-long trips from 61,900 KZT per participant. The difference between one-day and multi-day tours is not just duration but the logistics of overnight stays at bases near Kolsai Lakes or Charyn Canyon, three meals a day, and additional camping gear. Unlike aggregators that add a 15-20% commission, the direct organizer offers a fair price per person with no hidden fees—you pay exactly what you see when booking.

What's Included in the Tour Price

  • Mountain bike: Cannondale or Merida—free rental within the tour, no need to bring your bike from the city.
  • Protection: helmet, gloves, hydration pack—all provided before the start and included in the base price.
  • Insurance: coverage up to 500,000 KZT per participant—mandatory for mountain trips.
  • Transfer: from central Almaty to the route start (30-60 minutes)—by minibus with bike racks.
  • Snack and water: included; hot lunch—extra (usually 1,500-2,000 KZT at a café on the route).
  • Photos and videos: the guide takes pictures throughout the tour and sends a link the same evening.
  • Technical support: spare bike and support vehicle—in case of a puncture or breakdown on the trail.

Additional Services and Their Cost

For an extra fee, we offer drone footage—panoramic shots of gorges and passes from a bird's-eye view, which the guide processes and sends after the tour for 5,000 KZT for the entire route, including editing a 2-3 minute video. The drone is especially effective in open spaces—Assy Plateau and Charyn Canyon offer the best views, while in narrow gorges we only use ground-level filming. Lunch at a café on the route costs 1,500-2,000 KZT, rental of a GoPro action camera is 3,000 KZT per day, and late cancellation within 48 hours is free.

Top 5 Scenic Routes in Ile-Alatau by Bike

There are dozens of bike routes around Almaty, but some deserve special mention. We've compiled a top five of the most scenic—from gorges to high-altitude lakes. Bike hikes in Almaty from toor go through the most picturesque gorges and passes of the Ile-Alatau.

Almasay Gorge—Easy Start for Beginners

Almasay Gorge is the perfect route for a first trip in these parts: 25 km on a dirt road along a mountain river with minimal elevation gain and panoramic views of the Zailiysky Alatau. The road runs along the gorge floor, where climbs alternate with gentle descents—a beginner covers the distance in 2-3 hours without forced stops. Along the trail, you'll find springs with drinking water and red sandstone rock outcrops. The route passes by thermal springs where you can swim after the ride—the guide knows the exact location and timing for a stop. Bike tours in Almaty to Almasay Gorge are ideal for a first mountain experience.

Big Almaty Gorge—Classic for Intermediate Level

Big Almaty Gorge (BAO) is one of the most popular routes for intermediate level: 35 km with a 400-meter climb along a switchback through coniferous forests to the lake dam. The road starts from the city outskirts and winds along the mountain slope for 15 km, offering views of Almaty from an altitude of 1800 meters. In the coniferous zone, you'll find thickets of raspberries and currants—in July, the guide takes a break for berry picking. On this route, we stop at a viewpoint at 2200 meters, offering a view of the entire city, and on clear days, you can see Talgar Peak.

Charyn Canyon and Kolsai Lakes—Multi-Day Expeditions

Multi-day expeditions to Charyn Canyon and Kolsai Lakes cover 50-80 km per day over diverse terrain: from the red cliffs of Charyn to the turquoise lakes at altitudes of 1800-2200 meters. The first day goes along the canyon floor, where a dirt road follows the Charyn River—temperatures here are 5-7°C higher than in the foothills, and the canyon walls rise 150-300 meters. The second day involves a climb to Kolsai along a switchback through a spruce forest with sharp turns every kilometer. At Kolsai, the route winds between three lakes—the elevation difference between them is 400 meters, providing intense cardiovascular exercise and a change of scenery from pine forest to alpine meadows.

Assy Plateau and Kok-Zhaylyau Pass—For Experienced Riders

The route to Assy Plateau via Kok-Zhaylyau Pass is the highest: elevation gain of 1000 meters, maximum altitude of 3000 meters, distance of 60 km on rocky trails. The first half goes along a forest road with gradients up to 12%—the climb takes 3-4 hours at an average speed of 8-10 km/h. Above the tree line begins the alpine meadow zone, where the trail turns into a rocky singletrack with small boulders. On Assy Plateau, edelweiss bloom in summer, and from the pass, you can see Khan Tengri Peak on clear days—for this shot, experienced riders conquer the toughest climbs.

Complete Gear List: What to Bring and What's Provided On-Site

Beginners often bring too much or forget essentials. Mountain bike tours in Almaty require proper gear—we provide everything needed on-site. We break down what's provided on-site and what you need to bring, plus a bike preparation checklist for mountain routes.

What Toor Provides On-Site: Bike, Helmet, Gloves, Hydration Pack

We provide each participant with a fully tuned mountain bike (Cannondale Trail or Merida Big Nine), helmet, cycling gloves, and hydration pack—all included in the tour price with no extra charges. Mountain bike tours in Almaty from toor use Cannondale Trail or Merida Big Nine. For Almaty trails with elevation gains up to 1000 meters, the Cannondale Trail 6 with 100 mm suspension travel is a versatile choice: it handles dirt on descents from Kok-Zhaylyau and rocky climbs to Zhosaly-Kezen Pass equally well. The Merida Big Nine 100, on the other hand, is lighter on climbs due to its rigid fork—preferred by experienced riders who want to pick up speed on forest singletracks in Turgen. Bikes undergo pre-departure checks: tire pressure at 2.5-3.0 atm for mountain terrain, tuned Shimano MT200 hydraulic brakes, and a lubricated chain—you get a trail-ready bike.

What to Bring: Clothing, Footwear, Sun Protection

  • Clothing: cycling shorts with padding or synthetic sports pants—jeans chafe after 10 km, and cotton doesn't dry in the wind.
  • Footwear: sneakers or trekking boots with a flat, ridged sole—no flip-flops or smooth-soled sneakers; they slip on wet rocks in Almasay Gorge.
  • Sun protection: SPF 50+ cream on exposed areas, polarized sunglasses (reflection from rocks is more blinding than direct sun), and a cap under the helmet.
  • Personal items: a small waist bag for phone and documents—a backpack on your back over 4-6 hours creates a greenhouse effect and extra strain on your lower back.
  • Water: we provide a hydration pack, but if you drink a lot (more than 2 liters per ride), bring an extra bottle: at altitudes of 2000-3000 meters, dehydration occurs faster than in the city.

How to Prepare Your Bike for a Mountain Route (Checklist)

Before a mountain bike tour, check tire pressure (2.5-3.0 atm for dirt and rocks), hydraulic brake function, and chain condition—these are the three main components for safety on descents. On rocky trails of the Ile-Alatau—especially sections with large gravel toward Assy Plateau—low pressure (below 2.0 atm) leads to pinch flats against rock edges, while excessive pressure (above 3.5 atm) makes the wheel rigid and reduces cornering grip. Hydraulic brakes (Shimano or Tektro) require checking the fluid level in the reservoir: if the lever pulls more than halfway to the handlebar, brake fluid needs topping up; otherwise, on long descents from Kezen Pass, the pads will overheat and lose grip. On rocky trails of the Ile-Alatau, the chain experiences maximum load: if dry or stretched, the risk of breakage on climbs triples—lubrication before each tour is mandatory.

Safety Rules on Mountain Bike Trails

Mountain trails of the Ile-Alatau are not a city park. Bike trekking in Almaty at altitudes up to 3000 meters requires following safety rules. Here, specific rules apply: from distance within the group to guide signals. We break down the key safety norms applied in every tour.

Distance in the Group and Guide Signals

In toor bike tours, the "two-bike" rule applies: distance between bikes is at least two bike lengths on flat roads and four lengths on descents to avoid collisions during sudden braking. Groups are limited to 12 people, with one guide per six participants—the guide brings up the rear, while the lead guide sets the pace. On rocky sections of Turgen Gorge or singletracks on Assy Plateau, the distance increases to six lengths—stones fly from under wheels and can hit the rider behind. The guide gives hand signals: raised hand means "stop," hand to the side means "obstacle right/left," circular finger motion means "gather in a circle." Learn them during the pre-ride briefing—shouting on a descent is useless due to wind and gravel noise.

Behavior on Descents and Climbs

On descents, keep your weight back, fingers on brake levers, speed no higher than what allows confident control over rocks and roots. On singletracks with wet grass or scree, traction drops by 30-40%—on such sections, it's better to walk for 10-15 meters than to fall at 25 km/h. Climbs, on the other hand, require shifting weight forward to keep the front wheel from lifting on steep turns. The main mistake on a climb is shifting gears abruptly under load: the chain can slip or break. Shift before the climb begins, and on steep sections, hold one gear—shifting while moving on gravel with a 15° angle will break the chain once every 50-60 such attempts.

Insurance and Technical Support in Toor Bike Tours

Each participant in a toor bike tour is insured for up to 500,000 KZT—the insurance covers injuries and accidents on the route and is included in the tour price with no extra charges. The policy is valid from departure from Almaty to return—covering both transfer and the active part of the route. On challenging rides—for example, Zhosaly-Kezen Pass with a 1000 m elevation gain—we deploy a support vehicle with a spare bike: if a chain breaks or a derailleur fails, you switch to the backup bike and continue the tour without delay. The driver maintains a 15-20 minute distance from the group and carries extra water, a first aid kit, and a repair kit for three standard failures—puncture, broken cable, and damaged bottom bracket.

Symptoms of Altitude Sickness and Actions for Poor Health

At altitudes above 2500 meters, altitude sickness is possible: dizziness, nausea, shortness of breath—at the first symptoms, immediately stop climbing, sit down, and inform the guide. On Ile-Alatau routes with a maximum altitude of 3000 m, symptoms can appear within 30-40 minutes of active pedaling uphill—heart rate jumps to 150-160 bpm, and oxygen in the air is 30% less than in Almaty. Unlike hiking, cycling places a higher load on the cardiovascular system due to constant leg muscle tension—so acclimatization in Almaty (800 m) before a tour at 3000 m is mandatory even for experienced riders. If symptoms do not subside after 15 minutes of rest and hydration, the guide decides to descend 500-700 meters in altitude, where well-being recovers within 20-30 minutes.
