Route and Duration

The tour lasts 4 days and 3 nights. Day 1 is a long drive from Almaty to Karakol, about 400 km, taking 6–7 hours including border crossing and stops. Days 2 and 3 are spent exploring the gorges and hot springs. Day 4 returns to Almaty via the north shore of Issyk-Kul.

The bus crosses the border at Korday, then passes through Cholpon-Ata and along the southern coast of Issyk-Kul. The road offers views of the lake and the Teskey Ala-Too range. Arrival in Karakol is in the late afternoon, with time for a short city walk.

On day 2, you visit Jety-Oguz gorge with its red rock formations, and on day 3 you go to Altyn-Arashan, a high mountain valley with hot springs. The return on day 4 includes a stop at Issyk-Kul for photos and lunch.

Group Format and Transport

This is a group tour with fixed departure dates. The bus is a modern coach with air conditioning and comfortable seats. You will be accompanied by an English-speaking guide throughout.

The group size is limited to ensure quality, but no individual changes to the itinerary are possible. The tour runs with a minimum number of participants; if not met, the date may be rescheduled or canceled with a full refund.

Transport is by bus only; no flights or private cars are included. The bus is not equipped for off-road travel, so some sections in Altyn-Arashan may be done by local 4x4 or on foot, depending on road conditions.

Jety-Oguz Gorge

Jety-Oguz is a gorge about 30 km west of Karakol, known for its striking red sandstone cliffs that resemble seven bulls, hence the name 'Seven Bulls' in Kyrgyz. The main attraction is the Broken Heart rock, a large red cliff split in two.

The gorge is part of the Teskey Ala-Too range and reaches altitudes of 2,200 to 3,000 meters. The area is famous for its mineral springs, including the Jety-Oguz resort, which has been in operation since the 1930s. The water is slightly radioactive and rich in hydrogen sulfide, good for joint and skin ailments.

We will spend about 3 hours here, taking a short hike to a viewpoint over the valley and visiting the springs. The hike is easy, about 2 km each way, with a gentle incline.

Geology and Scenery

The red rocks are Jurassic conglomerates and sandstones, formed about 150 million years ago. The contrast between the red cliffs and the green meadows is striking, especially in the evening light.

From the viewpoint, you can see the entire gorge, with the river Jety-Oguz flowing below. On clear days, the peaks of the Teskey Ala-Too are visible to the south.

The area is also home to wildlife such as marmots, foxes, and occasionally ibex on the higher slopes. Birdwatchers may spot golden eagles and bearded vultures.

Hot Springs

The hot springs at Jety-Oguz are a must-try. The water temperature is around 40–50°C, and there are several open-air pools. The mineral content is believed to have therapeutic effects.

We will have time to soak in the pools, which are fed by natural springs. The facilities are basic but clean, with changing rooms and showers.

Please bring your swimsuit and towel. The springs are especially pleasant in the cooler months, but they are enjoyable year-round.

Flora and Fauna

The gorge is covered with spruce forests, juniper, and wild rose bushes. In spring and early summer, the meadows are full of edelweiss and other alpine flowers.

Animals in the area include roe deer, wild boar, and snow leopards, though the latter are rarely seen. The river is home to trout, which you may see in the clear water.

Local shepherds graze their cattle in the valley, and you may encounter yurts during the summer months. This is a great opportunity to learn about nomadic life.

Altyn-Arashan Gorge

Altyn-Arashan, meaning 'Golden Spring', is a high mountain valley located about 30 km east of Karakol, at an altitude of 2,500 meters. The gorge is famous for its hot springs and stunning alpine scenery.

The access road is rough and often requires a 4x4 vehicle. From Karakol, the drive takes about 1.5 hours, but we will use local jeeps for this transfer, which is included in the tour price. The road follows the Ak-Suu river, passing through pine forests and meadows.

Once in the valley, you can see the peaks of the Tian Shan, including Pobeda Peak (7,439 m) and Khan Tengri (7,010 m) on a clear day. The valley is a paradise for hikers, with numerous trails leading to glaciers and alpine lakes.

Hot Springs and Facilities

The hot springs in Altyn-Arashan are natural pools with temperatures ranging from 30 to 70°C. The water is rich in radon and other minerals, believed to have healing properties.

There are several pools, some with wooden cabins for changing. The facilities are rustic, but the experience of soaking in a hot pool surrounded by snow-capped peaks is unforgettable.

We will spend about 4 hours in the valley, including time for a hike to the nearby waterfall or a short trek to the viewpoint. The hike to the waterfall takes about 30 minutes each way.

Hiking and Activities

Besides soaking, you can take a walk to the Altyn-Arashan waterfall, which is about 2 km from the hot springs. The trail is well-marked and passes through a forest of Siberian spruce.

For more adventurous travelers, there is a longer hike to the Ala-Kul Lake, which is about 10 km away and requires a full day. This is not part of the tour, but you can arrange it independently if you stay extra nights.

In the valley, you may also see herds of horses and yaks, which belong to local herders. The area is a popular destination for eco-tourism, and there are several guesthouses for overnight stays.

Best Time to Visit

The best time for this excursion is from June to September, when the weather is mild and the roads are passable. In July and August, the meadows are in full bloom, and the temperatures are pleasant.

In spring and autumn, the weather can be unpredictable, with possible snow at higher elevations. The road may be muddy, but the hot springs are especially comforting in cooler weather.

Winter visits are possible for those who enjoy snow, but the road is often blocked by snow, and only experienced travelers with proper equipment should attempt it.

Issyk-Kul Lake

Issyk-Kul is the second-largest saline lake in the world, after the Caspian Sea, and the largest in Kyrgyzstan. It sits at an altitude of 1,607 meters and never freezes, hence its name, which means 'warm lake' in Kyrgyz.

The lake is a major tourist destination, with resorts along its northern and southern shores. Its clear water and sandy beaches attract swimmers in summer, but the lake is also beautiful in winter when the surrounding mountains are snow-covered.

On this tour, you will have several opportunities to see the lake, especially on the first and last days as you travel along its shores. We will make a stop at a scenic viewpoint for photos.

Geography and Climate

The lake is surrounded by the Kungey Ala-Too to the north and the Teskey Ala-Too to the south. Its catchment area includes numerous rivers and glaciers.

The climate around the lake is milder than the surrounding mountains, with warm summers and moderately cold winters. The water temperature in summer reaches up to 22°C, making it comfortable for swimming.

The lake is known for its many beaches, but the most popular are on the northern shore, near Cholpon-Ata. The southern shore is less developed and more peaceful.

Cultural and Historical Significance

Issyk-Kul has been a crossroads of civilizations for thousands of years. Ancient Silk Road caravans passed along its shores, and the lake is dotted with archaeological sites.

Near Cholpon-Ata, you can see the Stone Garden, a collection of ancient petroglyphs dating back to the 2nd millennium BC. These are not included in the tour, but you may have free time to visit them.

The lake is also sacred to local people, and many legends surround its creation. One story says that a city was once submerged beneath its waters as punishment for the pride of its inhabitants.

Wildlife and Nature

The lake is home to over 20 species of fish, some of which are endemic. Birdlife is abundant, especially during migration seasons, when thousands of waterfowl stop at the lake.

In the surrounding mountains, you might spot ibex, argali sheep, and snow leopards, though they are rarely seen. The area is also known for its wildflowers, including edelweiss and blue poppies.

Karakol Town

Karakol is a charming town with a population of about 70,000, situated at the eastern end of Issyk-Kul. It was founded in 1869 as a Russian military outpost and has a rich history.

The town is known for its wooden houses, many of which date back to the 19th century. The most notable landmark is the Dungan Mosque, built in 1907 without a single nail, reflecting a blend of Chinese and Islamic architecture.

Another must-see is the Holy Trinity Cathedral, a Russian Orthodox church built in 1895, which survived the Soviet era. Both are within walking distance of the town center.

Local Culture and Cuisine

Karakol is a melting pot of cultures, including Kyrgyz, Russian, and Dungan. The local cuisine reflects this diversity, with dishes like lagman (noodle soup), manty (steamed dumplings), and ashlyan-fu (a spicy Dungan cold noodle dish).

You will have free time to explore the town and try some of these foods. The central market is a great place to buy fresh fruits, nuts, and souvenirs.

The town also has a small museum dedicated to the explorer Nikolai Przhevalsky, who used Karakol as a base for his expeditions. The museum is located in a park on the outskirts of town.

This tour is suitable for most travelers, but a reasonable level of fitness is required for the short hikes. The maximum altitude reached is 2,500 meters, so altitude sickness is unlikely for most people, but we advise you to stay hydrated.

You should bring comfortable walking shoes, a warm jacket for the evenings, and a swimsuit for the hot springs. Sunscreen and a hat are essential for sunny days.

Border crossing requires a valid passport. Citizens of most countries do not need a visa for Kyrgyzstan for stays up to 60 days, but please check the latest requirements for your nationality.

Seasonal Information

The tour operates from May to October, with the best weather in July and August. In May and September, the temperature is cooler, but the landscapes are green and the crowds are smaller.

The tour is not offered in winter due to road conditions and the closure of some facilities.

Monthly Weather and Conditions

As you can see, the summer months offer the most comfortable conditions. However, even in summer, the temperature at higher altitudes can drop significantly, so bring layers.

The hot springs are enjoyable in all seasons, and the contrast of hot water and cool air is invigorating.

Comparison with Other Tours

This tour is unique because it combines the cultural experience of Karakol with the natural beauty of the gorges and hot springs. It is a longer journey, but it offers a deeper insight into the region.

If you have limited time, you might consider shorter tours to Charyn Canyon or Kolsai Lakes, which are closer to Almaty. However, they do not offer the same hot springs or high-altitude scenery.
