Paragliding from Almaty: tandem, training, and best mountain spots

Paragliding flight from Almaty is a tandem flight with a certified FAI instructor at an altitude of 500–1500 meters above the mountains. At toor, we organize flights from launch sites in the Alma-Arasan gorge, on the Assy plateau, and at the Kok-Zhaylyau pass. Price starts from 3,263 tenge per person, duration is 20–30 minutes. Season: April–October.

Safety of paragliding flights: myths and reality

Fear of heights and doubts about equipment reliability are the main barriers for beginners. We break down what actually protects a passenger in a tandem flight, and what are just myths from social media.

FAI instructor certification: what it means for the passenger

An FAI license is a single global standard confirming the pilot's qualification in tandem flights and training, unlike one-time local certificates. An instructor with an FAI annually passes standards in emergency piloting: spiral exit, simulated wing collapse, landing on a confined area — and undergoes re-certification at an accredited center. There are only a handful of such pilots in Kazakhstan: a minimum of 500 hours of tandem flight time and knowledge of the mountain terrain of the Almaty gorges are mandatory. In the event of a sudden wing collapse at an altitude of 200 meters above the Alma-Arasan gorge, such a pilot acts according to an algorithm without losing control of the passenger, and during a sharp gust of wind near a slope, decides on an emergency descent rather than trying to reach the landing zone — this is a skill confirmed only by annual re-certification.

How the equipment works: EN-A and EN-B wings, helmet, harness system

EN-A class paragliders are wings with maximum passive safety: they recover from turbulence on their own without pilot input, unlike EN-B wings which require active control. For beginners, we offer exactly EN-A — for example, Advance Sigma 10 or Ozone Mojo 6 with European standard certification, and before each flight, the wing is checked for micro-tears using a light test. The Advance Progress 4 harness system with five-point belts secures the passenger so that even if they lose consciousness, the person cannot fall out — the belts lock automatically under body weight. The Protec Classic helmet with dual foam is certified to EN 966 for paragliding, and the Motorola DP4400 radio with loudspeaker transmits the instructor's commands directly into the helmet even in winds of 7 m/s — in the Butakovka gorge, where updrafts are stronger, fabric integrity and communication quality are critical to keep the canopy stable.

Accident insurance: is it mandatory and how much does it cost

At toor, we recommend taking out accident insurance — from 1,500 tenge per day, it covers medical evacuation and treatment for injuries during a flight at the mountain launch sites of Almaty. Policies from Freedom Insurance or Halyk are valid in the Butakovka and Kok-Zhaylyau gorges, where an ambulance arrives in 40 minutes — without insurance, calling an emergency helicopter will cost from 300,000 tenge. You can take it out online 5 minutes before leaving for the launch site: you only need your IIN and phone number, we help with tariff selection. Insurance is not included in the tour price by default, but in case of a fracture or dislocation, a policy for 1,500 tenge per day fully covers hospitalization and transportation — without it, you risk paying for treatment out of your own pocket, and the amount can easily reach 500,000 tenge per day in a private clinic.

What to do if you're afraid of heights: instructor's tips

Over 60% of passengers experience fear before their first flight — we conduct a preliminary briefing on the ground, explain each stage, and give time to get used to the equipment for 5-7 minutes in the harness system. The technique is simple: first, you stand in the harness while the pilot checks the wing — the brain adapts to the new sensations, then follows a test hop of 2-3 meters, after which you realize it's not scary. If anxiety persists, the instructor can reduce the altitude to 200 meters and fly along the slope — this way the passenger sees the trees and ground closer, which reduces the feeling of a void below. The most effective technique is to look not down, but at the horizon: at an altitude of 500 meters, the mountains of the Zailiysky Alatau and the city look like a map, and fear turns into delight within 10 seconds of soaring.

Paragliding prices in Almaty: what determines the cost

The cost of a paragliding flight varies from 3,263 to 167,983 tenge — let's break down what's included in each option and how not to overpay.

The price of paragliding in Almaty depends on the season, the chosen site, and additional services — transfer, photography, meals.

The paragliding price in Almaty includes equipment, briefing, and guide services — no hidden fees.

Table: tandem flight, training, VIP tour — what's included in the price

OptionPrice (tenge/person)DurationWhat's included
Short tandem flightfrom 3,26320–30 minEquipment, briefing, flight with instructor
Tandem flight with transferfrom 9,26320–30 min + travel timeEquipment, briefing, flight, transfer from city (up to 4 people)
VIP tourup to 167,983Full dayEquipment, briefing, flight, transfer, meals, extended photo/video
Paragliding training (3 days)from 61,9003 daysTheory, practice, equipment, certificate, transfer

Transfer and photo/video: what is often added to the base price

Transfer from the city to the launch site costs from 6,000 tenge per group of up to 4 people — this is cheaper than a taxi to the mountains, where drivers inflate the price by 2–3 times due to lack of communication at Almaty sites (Butakovka gorge, Kok-Zhaylyau plateau, Alma-Arasan). Photo and video shooting is included in 70% of our tours: we use action cameras on the instructor's helmet and on the ground for aerial and ground shots. The difference between a short tandem and a VIP tour is precisely in the transfer, meals, and extended shooting, not in the sensations at an altitude of 500–1500 m, which are the same regardless of the package.

Why toor has no hidden fees

We are a direct tour operator, not an aggregator: we organize the flights ourselves, so the price has no intermediary commissions or markups for "booking." Beginners, when comparing offers, often see a seemingly low price from resellers, but on site it turns out that equipment is paid separately, and photos are an extra 5,000 tenge. The price at booking is final — it already includes equipment, briefing, and guide services, no additional payment is needed on site.

Best places for paragliding flights in the Almaty region

There are several launch sites near the city — each offers its own view, altitude, and conditions. We explain how they differ.

Paragliding in the mountains of Almaty is possible from three main sites — each offers its own view and altitude.

Where to paraglide in Almaty is a common question for beginners, and the answer depends on your experience and altitude preferences.

Alma-Arasan Gorge (1200 m) — a classic for beginners

The Alma-Arasan gorge is our most popular launch site: altitude 1200 meters, smooth wind flow, and a panorama of the Zailiysky Alatau, perfect for beginners. The wind here comes from the southwest through the spurs of the ridge, so turbulence is minimal — the paraglider holds a steady course without sharp banks. From this point, you can see Peak Abay (4010 m) and, in clear weather, the Big Almaty Lake 25 km to the south. The launch is gentle — a concrete strip 80 meters long, the run-up takes 4–6 steps, which reduces stress for beginners. This site offers a view of Peak Abay and the Big Almaty Lake — in clear weather, visibility reaches 50 km, providing the best photos.

Assy Plateau (2000 m) — altitude and long-distance routes

The Assy Plateau at an altitude of 2000 meters is our highest launch site, from which flights lasting up to 40 minutes and routes covering distances up to 120 km are performed. Here the wind blows from the northeast along the Kungey Alatau ridge, creating updrafts of up to 3–5 m/s — this allows gaining 500–800 meters of altitude above the launch in 10–15 minutes. It was from the Assy Plateau that the region's record was set — a flight to the Chilik Valley (120 km), but for beginners we use short routes with a gentle climb.

Kok-Zhaylyau Pass (1500 m) — the closest point to the city

The Kok-Zhaylyau pass is located just 15 km from Almaty — it is the most accessible launch site, offering a view of the city and mountains, and the flight lasts the standard 20–30 minutes. The wind here comes from the south through the Butakovka gorge, speed 3–5 m/s — a stable flow without gusts, suitable for tandems with children from 6 years old. From an altitude of 1500 meters, the residential areas of the Alatau district and Peak Talgar (4979 m) to the east are visible. Due to its proximity to the city, the wind at Kok-Zhaylyau is more stable in the morning hours — therefore, we recommend booking such flights with children from 6 years old at this location for the first half of the day.

Seasonality and weather: when is the best time to paraglide

The paragliding season in Almaty lasts from April to October, but the weather in the mountains changes quickly. We break down which months are most comfortable for flying and how to avoid cancellations.

Table: seasonality by month — temperature, wind, cancellation probability

MonthTemperature in the mountains, °CWind, m/sCancellation probabilityRecommendation
April+5…+124–8Average (30%)Fly in the first half of the day
May+10…+183–6Low (15%)Ideal for beginners
June–August+15…+253–5Low (10%)Peak season, book 3–5 days in advance
September+10…+203–6Low (15%)Best views due to clear skies
October+5…+124–8Average (35%)Book with flexible dates

How weather affects the flight and when it can be canceled

A flight is canceled if the wind speed exceeds 8 m/s, rain or a thunderstorm starts, or visibility drops below 1 km — the instructor makes the decision on site before launch, and even if the sky is clear in the city, an unstable gusty wind may blow in the gorge. In April and October, due to frequent pressure changes, cancellations occur more often, while in the peak season from May to September, the weather is stable, and cancellations are usually due to short-lived showers that pass in an hour and a half. If the weather turns bad, an operator like toor reschedules the flight for another day for free — if canceled 24 hours in advance, there are no deductions; if canceled less than 24 hours in advance, 30% of the cost is withheld, so in the off-season it's better to book with a 2–3 day buffer.

Why it's 5–10°C colder at altitude and how to account for it

At an altitude of 500–1500 meters, the temperature is always 5–10°C lower than in the city — if it's +25°C in Almaty, it will be +15…+18°C in the air, and with the wind, it feels like +10°C, because the airflow accelerates heat loss. Even in July, in the morning at the launch site, for example on the Kok-Zhaylyau plateau (1500 m), the air warms up only by noon, and before that it stays at +10…+12°C. Many beginners dress for the weather in the city and get cold in the air — we always warn: take a windbreaker or fleece even in July, especially if you are flying in the morning or evening, and be sure to wear closed shoes, as the grass at the launch is often wet from dew.

What to bring for the flight: clothes, shoes, documents

The right gear is not about comfort, but about safety in the air. We tell you what you absolutely must wear and bring, and what is better to leave in the car.

Checklist: clothes and shoes for the flight by season

  • Windproof jacket or fleece: at an altitude of 1000 m, the wind feels 5–10°C colder than in the city — a layer is needed even in July.
  • Long trousers: jeans or trekking pants — shorts and skirts are prohibited due to the risk of chafing from the lines and hypothermia of the legs.
  • Closed shoes with a flat sole: sneakers or trekking boots — flip-flops, heels, and sandals are not allowed: foot fixation is needed during takeoff and landing.
  • Headgear under the helmet: a thin hat or buff — a helmet is provided at the point, but without a liner it slips and rubs the forehead.
  • Gloves (for April, October, and windy days): thin cycling or trekking gloves — hands get cold the fastest due to the airflow at a speed of 30–40 km/h. Scarves, long laces, and loose hair are the main danger in the air: they can get tangled in the wing's lines, so at the launch we ask to put hair in a bun and tuck laces into shoes.

Documents and additional items: what you must have with you

  • Identification: passport or ID card — mandatory for registration for the flight and for taking out insurance at the site.
  • For children 6–18 years old: birth certificate + written consent from a parent or guardian — without these documents, the instructor has no right to take the child into the air.
  • Action camera (GoPro or similar): if you want to film yourself — take a helmet mount or chest strap, a standard selfie stick holder is not suitable.
  • Sunglasses: at altitude, ultraviolet radiation is 20–30% more intense than in the city, eyes get tired quickly and water from the wind.
  • Water bottle (0.5–1 L): at the launch site in the Alma-Arasan and Kok-Zhaylyau gorges, there are no shops — dehydration in the mountains sets in after 20–30 minutes of active exposure to the sun. We do not recommend holding a smartphone in your hand during the flight — it can slip out at an altitude of 500 m; it's better to attach it to the harness or give it to the instructor for shooting via toor.

How to choose a paragliding tour: tandem or training?

Beginners often don't understand the difference between a tandem flight and full-fledged training. We break down who each option suits and how to make an informed choice without overspending.

Tandem flight: for whom and what it offers

A tandem paragliding flight in Almaty is a flight with an instructor who controls the wing: the passenger sits in the front harness, enjoys the views, and is not responsible for piloting. All control is taken by a certified pilot with an FAI license — he controls speed, turns, and altitude, while the passenger can hold an action camera or just look around. The average duration is 20–30 minutes, during which you gain up to 500–1500 meters above the launch level and fly several kilometers along the mountain slope. We organize such flights at the sites of the Alma-Arasan gorge and the Kok-Zhaylyau plateau — with a transfer from the city for 6,000 tenge per group of up to four people. A tandem is ideal for those who want to try paragliding once without obligations — you get the full experience in 20–30 minutes without needing to learn theory and pass exams. A paragliding flight with an instructor in Almaty lasts 20–30 minutes and is suitable even for those who have never flown.

Paragliding training: who should learn and not just fly

Paragliding training over 3 days is a course after which you receive a certificate and can fly independently (in tandem with an instructor during training), but for full solo flights, 10–15 days of practice are needed. The program includes aerodynamics theory, ground practice on a simulator (wing on the ground), first short hops from a hill, and 2–3 full flights with an instructor via radio — he corrects your actions with voice in the helmet. Our course is taught by the same FAI pilots who fly in tandem — the difference is only in the student's role: you hold the brakes yourself and make decisions on each turn. We recommend training for those who plan to fly regularly — the cost of the course from 61,900 tenge pays off after just 5–6 tandem flights, and the skill stays for life.

If you are unsure, start with a tandem — after it, you will understand if you want to continue learning and can make an informed decision without losing money on a course that might not be needed.

Paragliding training: how to become a pilot in 3 days

The three-day paragliding training course is an intensive after which you will be able to control the wing under the supervision of an instructor. We explain how the program is structured.

Day 1: theory and ground preparation

The first day of training begins with theory: paraglider structure, aerodynamics, meteorology, and safety rules — 4 hours in the classroom, then 2 hours of ground training with the wing on the field. You learn how the A, B, C, D lines are arranged, what "ears" are, and how the accelerator works, along with the basics of reading the wind flow using flags at the launch. On the field, you practice lifting the canopy from a standing position, controlling wing tilt, and the correct stance during the first run-up steps. In our program, at this stage, the instructor lets you feel the tension of the lines in your hands and teaches you to dampen the canopy during gusts. Ground training is the most important stage: you learn to feel the canopy, correctly tension the lines, and take the first step for takeoff, which lays the foundation for all subsequent flights.

Day 2: first flights with an instructor

The second day is practice on a training slope: you perform 5–7 short flights from a height of 50–100 meters, the instructor corrects your actions via radio from the ground. The task is to practice takeoff from a natural slope, maintaining course, and a soft landing at a given point; each run lasts 2–3 minutes, with error analysis and changing the start position in between. On the training slope, we use two-way radios so the instructor can instantly suggest how to correct a bank or turn. The main goal of the second day is to practice takeoff and landing to the point of automaticity, so that on the third day you can focus on control in the air and turns.

Day 3: solo flight under supervision

The third day is the culmination of the course: you independently perform a flight from a height of 200–300 meters, the instructor observes from the ground and gives tips via radio, but the control is entirely in your hands. In the air, you master turns with altitude gain and loss, working the accelerator, and braking for a precise landing in a corridor 10 meters wide — these are basic skills tested in the final exam. Upon completion of the course, we issue a certificate of the established form indicating flight time (average 40–60 minutes over three days) and completed exercises. After a successful third day, you receive a certificate that grants the right to training flights in tandem with an instructor or at training camps — this is not a pilot's license, but a confirmation of a basic level.

Combo tours and additional services: paragliding + horse riding

Paragliding is not the only way to see the mountains from above. Combo tours combine the flight with other activities to make the day more eventful. We break down the available options and additions.

Combo tour "Paragliding + horse riding"

Paragliding tours in Almaty from toor include not only the flight but also additional activities — horse riding, picnics, and photography. The combo tour "Paragliding + horse riding" lasts 4–5 hours: first, a 20-minute tandem flight over the Ile-Alatau National Park, then a 2-hour horse ride along mountain trails with a guide. After landing on the Kok-Zhaylyau plateau, participants switch to horses — the route passes through juniper groves and springs to a viewpoint at an altitude of 1800 m. Riding equipment (helmet, saddle) is provided on site, no horse riding experience is required — the instructor leads the horse if you are a beginner. Our combo price is from 15,000 KZT, including transfer from the city, flight, horse rental, and insurance. This format is ideal for those who want to get maximum impressions in one day: the flight gives adrenaline, and the horse ride offers a calm introduction to nature.

Other combo options and additions

  • Transfer from city: included in the tandem flight price (from 3,263 KZT), departure at 8:00 and 14:00 from the "Kazakhstan" hotel.
  • Photo and video shooting: from 2,000 KZT, a professional operator films the flight from the ground and air — footage is provided on a flash drive within an hour.
  • Picnic on the plateau: after the flight — tea, pastries, and a view of the mountains (additional 1,500 KZT), served at an altitude of 1500 m with a view of Peak Nursultan.
  • Combo "Paragliding + horse riding": 4–5 hours, from 15,000 KZT (includes flight, ride, and transfer), with a guide-instructor at both stages.
  • VIP package: individual transfer, light lunch, drone footage, and an extended flight (up to 40 minutes) — from 25,000 KZT.

Conclusion

Paragliding in the Almaty region is an accessible form of active recreation that requires no special training. We have gathered the main conclusions on prices, locations, and safety for beginners.

Key takeaways

  • Safety is a priority: modern certified equipment, experienced instructors, and insurance make such adventures safe for beginners.
  • The price is affordable for everyone: a tandem flight costs from 3,263 KZT, training from 61,900 KZT, and combo tours allow you to combine several activities.
  • The best places are in the mountains: the Asy-Turgen plateau, Turgen and Aksai gorges are proven locations with stable air currents and panoramic views.
  • The season is from April to October: during this time, the weather is stable, and the wind is optimal for flying; dress for the weather and bring sunglasses.
  • Start with a tandem: if you are unsure, try a flight with an instructor — it's a safe way to understand if you want to learn to fly independently.
