Kayaking from Almaty is an active holiday on the Ili, Turgen, Shelek, and Karatal rivers from May to October. toor organizes one-day (from 3263 KZT/person) and multi-day tours (from 18900 KZT/person) with transfer, equipment, certified guide, and lunch. No experience needed — safe, with briefing and life jackets.

Which rivers are suitable for kayaking from Almaty — comparison for beginners and experienced

The main question for a beginner is which river suits them best. We break down four rivers in the Almaty region: Ili, Turgen, Shelek, and Karatal — by difficulty, length, types, and who each is for.

Ili River — ideal start for beginners and families

Kayaking in Kazakhstan starts with the Ili River — the most popular route for beginners. Kayaking on the Ili from Almaty is the most popular route for beginners: length from 10 to 40 km, calm current, difficulty class 1-2, water temperature in summer +18..+22°C. The route starts near the village of Bakanas, 180 km from the city, and passes through wide reaches without a single rapid — you can paddle at any pace, and on riffles the depth never drops below half a meter. The water warms up to +22°C by mid-July, so a wetsuit is optional, although we offer it for 2000 tenge. For your first time, choose a one-day route from Bakanas village — 6-8 hours with lunch on the shore, no rapids or sharp drops.

Turgen River — for those seeking thrills and rapids

The Turgen River — a route with class 2-3 rapids, suitable for experienced tourists or physically fit beginners after briefing. The section from Turgen village, 15-30 km long, includes riffles with boulders, narrows down to 5 meters, and local shivers where the flow speed reaches 3 m/s — these elements provide the adrenaline missing on the Ili. The guide shows how to navigate them safely: groups of 4-8 people with one instructor per four kayaks, mandatory briefing on paddling in fast water before the start.

Shelek and Karatal Rivers — for lovers of wild nature and solitude

Shelek — scenic canyons and calm current (class 1-2), ideal for families with children; Karatal — wild nature, few tourists, class 2-3. Shelek winds among rock walls up to 50 meters high, where turns reveal views of the Charyn Canyon, while on the Karatal you meet one or two groups per day — the rest of the time only banks with willows and rare nomad camps. The guide films rock walls and green banks with a GoPro — after the tour we send photos and videos so you can share your impressions.

Prices for kayaking from Almaty: one-day vs multi-day tours

Kayaking tours in Almaty start from 3263 KZT per person — we break down how much a kayaking trip from Almaty costs, what is included in each price, and why a multi-day tour is more expensive than a one-day tour — no hidden fees.

One-day kayaking: price from 3263 KZT/person — what's included

Rafting Almaty prices start from 3263 KZT per person for a one-day route. A 1-day kayaking trip costs from 3263 KZT/person — the price includes transfer from the city, rental of a Riot Kayak kayak, paddle, life jacket, helmet, dry bag, certified guide, lunch on the shore, and insurance. The drive to the start on the Ili (Bakanas village) takes an hour, to Turgen an hour and a half — both options are included in the cost without extra charges for mileage; the guide leads a group of 4-8 people, films the route with a GoPro, and sends photos after the tour — no extra charge for filming, unlike operators selling media packages for 3000-5000 KZT. Lunch — hot meal over a fire with tea and snacks, prepared by the guide; you don't need to bring your own food, but if you have food allergies, let us know a day before the start. The only optional extra is a wetsuit for 2000 KZT: in May and September, when the water is cooler than +18°C, it prevents hypothermia, but in July-August, sportswear that dries in the sun in an hour or two is enough.

Multi-day kayaking: price from 18900 KZT/person — what's included extra

A multi-day kayaking trip costs from 18900 KZT per person — a two- or three-day tour additionally includes overnight stay. A two- or three-day tour costs from 18900 KZT/person — in addition to the one-day package, it includes overnight camping, dinner and breakfast, and an evening program by the fire. The route is longer (up to 40 km over two days vs 10-15 km in one), the guide leads the group along the Karatal River or the middle reaches of the Turgen, where class 2-3 rapids provide more adrenaline — for beginners, this is a noticeable step up in difficulty; camping equipment (tents, sleeping bags, sleeping mats) is provided at the start, so you don't need to bring your own, saving 8-10 kg of luggage per person. On a three-day tour (from 61900 KZT/person), full support includes three meals a day, evening stops with a bath by the water, and 6-8 hours of paddling per day — the guide not only leads but also cooks and sets up camp, so participants only paddle and relax. If you're taking a multi-day tour for the first time, choose a two-day one: an overnight on the shore gives a sense of adventure without the risk of overexertion that sets in on the third day for unprepared shoulders.

Water safety: rules, preparation, and what a beginner should do

Water trips in Almaty are safe for beginners — the fear of capsizing is the main barrier for those planning a water trip from Almaty. We break down how safety is organized at each stage: from briefing to actions in an emergency.

Briefing before the start: what the guide explains and how long it takes

Before each trip, we conduct a mandatory briefing — 20-30 minutes on the shore: how to hold the paddle (straight grip, blade at a 45° angle), how to get into the kayak (center of gravity low, don't step on the edge), what to do if you capsize (hold onto the boat, wait for the guide), how to paddle in pairs (synchronized strokes, the rear person adjusts to the front). The guide demonstrates technique on land — body position, blade rotation, braking — then gets into the water and corrects each participant during the first 100 meters of the route. On class 1-2 rivers like the Ili, this time is enough: the current is calm, you learn to maneuver on the go, and the guide keeps the group within 10-15 meters. The briefing takes place before the start, not in the water — so beginners don't have to worry about balancing and can hear every command.

Life jackets, helmets, and first aid kit: mandatory safety equipment

Each trip participant receives a life jacket and helmet — the jacket is class 50N, keeping you afloat even without movement (enough for calm rivers; class 70N is used on class 2-3 rapids), the helmet protects your head from rocks and accidental collisions between kayaks. Fitting is mandatory: the jacket is tightened on the chest and sides so it doesn't come off when falling, the helmet is secured under the chin with a strap — on Turgen rapids this is critical, where the flow speed reaches 12 km/h and there are rocks in the riverbed. The first aid kit on the route is specifically equipped for water trips: waterproof plasters (regular ones peel off), antiseptic in a sealed package, anti-nausea medication (even experienced kayakers get seasick on the Ili's waves), and a thermal blanket for hypothermia — the guide is trained to provide first aid directly on the water without leaving the kayak.

What is the minimum age for kayaking and are there any restrictions

Water trips from Almaty are available from age 7 on calm rivers — the Ili and Shelek are ideal: children sit in a kayak with one parent, wearing a life jacket and under constant visual supervision of the guide. For teenagers aged 12-16, we offer a separate kayak in pairs with peers — on a one-day route on the Ili this is safe: current speed 2-3 km/h, depth no more than 1.5 meters, the guide paddles nearby and adjusts distance. Health restrictions: water trips are prohibited for epilepsy, pregnancy, and problems with the vestibular system (seasickness on waves can cause nausea and loss of coordination). For children aged 7-12, a one-day route on the Ili with lunch on the shore is optimal — the guide films with a GoPro, the child doesn't get tired in 4-5 hours of paddling, and in the evening they receive a ready-made video of their first water adventure.

What to do if a kayak capsizes — guide's algorithm

If a kayak capsizes — the main rule: don't panic, hold onto the boat (it's buoyant and visible from the air), wait for the guide — he paddles over on his kayak, offers the end of a paddle or a safety line, and helps turn the boat upright over the side. The participant should not try to swim to the shore alone: the current can carry them away, and the life jacket keeps them afloat without effort — just lie on your back, feet forward downstream, hands on the jacket. On class 1-2 rivers (Ili, Shelek), capsizing is unlikely — depth rarely exceeds 1.5 meters, current is slow, the guide is always 10-20 meters from the group and sees each participant. Our practice: for 4 kayaks — 1 guide, for 8 kayaks — 2 guides, so that backup is instant and no participant is left without observation for more than 10 seconds.

Equipment for kayaking: what is provided and what to bring

Kayaking in Almaty requires the right equipment — one of the frequent questions is what to bring on a water trip. We divide: what is provided for free, what can be rented, and what you must bring yourself.

What equipment is included from toor: kayak, paddle, life jacket, helmet, dry bag

We provide each participant with a Riot Kayak kayak, paddle, life jacket, helmet, and dry bag for personal belongings — all included in the tour cost without extra charges. Riot Kayak kayaks are stable two-person boats for class 1-3 rivers with a wide hull and low center of gravity: they forgive beginners' mistakes and reduce the risk of capsizing even on Turgen rapids. Life jackets are selected by weight — children's models for teenagers from 30 kg, adult up to 120 kg, with adjustment on the chest and sides. The helmet protects against rock impacts on riffles — on the Ili, these occur near Bakanas where the depth drops to half a meter. The 40-liter dry bag holds a change of clothes, food, and phone — before the start, the guide shows how to roll the top properly so that no water gets inside even if the kayak capsizes.

What to bring on a water trip: clothing, shoes, food, and small items

  • Clothing: sportswear or light trousers plus a synthetic t-shirt — cotton gets wet and cools even at +20°C on the water; in May and September, add a windbreaker or fleece on top.
  • Footwear: trainers with non-slip soles or aqua shoes — flip-flops come off when entering the water, and trainers with smooth soles slip on wet rocks at stops.
  • Headgear: cap or wide-brimmed hat — sun reflection from the water surface can cause burns in an hour, even on a cloudy day.
  • Food and water: lunch is included in the tour, but bring 1-1.5 liters of water and a snack (nuts, energy bar) — energy expenditure is 400-500 kcal over 6 hours of paddling on an active route.
  • Sun protection: SPF 30-50 cream on exposed areas and glasses with a strap — regular glasses will fall into the water at the first turn of the kayak.
  • Personal items: phone in a waterproof case, spare dry clothes in the car, and a towel — everything is packed in a dry bag that protects even during full submersion.

Wetsuit: when needed and rental cost

A wetsuit can be rented from us for 2000 KZT — it is needed in May, September, and October when the water temperature drops below +18°C, and also on rivers with rapids (Turgen, Karatal) where spray on riffles quickly soaks clothing to the skin. The 3 mm neoprene retains heat even at +12°C in the air, and neoprene boots in the set protect feet from sharp rocks when landing. In July-August, the water warms up to +22°C — a wetsuit is not mandatory, a synthetic t-shirt and shorts are enough, but for multi-day tours we recommend bringing it for evening stops: after sunset on the Ili, the temperature drops to +10°C, and dry neoprene warms better than a windbreaker.

Seasonality of kayaking: when to go and how weather affects

The kayaking season in the Almaty region lasts from May to October, but each month differs in weather, water temperature, and river levels. We break down when to go for warmth and when for thrills.

Kayaking season: May-October, peak July-August

The kayaking season from Almaty runs from May to October, with peak in July-August when the water warms up to +22°C and rainfall is minimal. In June, the water temperature stays at +18..+20°C, daytime air warms up to +28°C, making this month comfortable for one-day routes on the Ili and Shelek. July and August are the busiest months: weekend bookings close 1-2 weeks in advance, especially for the Turgen with its class 2-3 rapids. September is the golden season: water still +18°C, daytime heat subsides to +22°C, and there are noticeably fewer tourists. In May and October, water is +15..+18°C — a wetsuit is mandatory, but rivers are fuller after snowmelt, providing a more dynamic current on the Ili and Turgen.

How weather affects kayaking: rain, wind, and water level

Rain and wind affect comfort but not safety — toor cancels a tour only under a storm warning (wind over 15 m/s); in other cases, the guide adjusts the route. A brief summer rain on the Ili lasts 15-20 minutes and doesn't hinder paddling, although a dry bag for belongings is mandatory — the guide provides it before the start. Wind on open sections of the Shelek River creates head waves up to 0.5 m, adding strain on the paddles, but on a Riot Kayak with its stability, it's safe for beginners. After rains, the water level on rivers rises by 20-30 cm — the current becomes faster, adding thrill on the Turgen, but on the Ili and Shelek it remains safe for beginners.

Best time for photos and videos on a kayaking trip

The best time for photos on a kayaking trip is morning (8:00-10:00) and pre-sunset hours (16:00-18:00), when the sun provides soft light on the Shelek canyons and the water surface of the Ili. At noon, the sun is at its zenith, creating harsh shadows and glare on the water — photos turn out flat, especially on open sections of the river. In autumn, the light is golden and low by 15:00, giving a warm tone to the canyon rocks and reflections of clouds in the water. The toor guide films with a GoPro throughout the entire route — you receive ready-made photos and videos after the tour, without being distracted by filming while paddling.

How to get to the starting points from Almaty — practical tips

Getting to the river is half the battle: we break down the logistics from the city to the starting point, including transfer, self-drive routes, and airport pickup for visiting tourists.

Transfer by toor: meeting point, how long to the river

toor organizes transfer from the city center to the starting point — meeting at the Kazakhstan Hotel at 8:00, the drive to Bakanas village (Ili River) takes 1.5–2 hours, to Turgen village — 1–1.5 hours. Transfer is included in the tour cost: a minibus for 8–10 people with air conditioning, kayaks are secured on the roof, luggage in the trunk; along the way, the guide conducts a briefing on boarding and equipment. If the group is mixed — beginners and experienced — the guide arranges seating in kayaks on the shore to balance duos by weight and paddling experience. On the A-3 highway to Bakanas, cell reception is unstable, especially after the turn to the village — download offline maps on your phone before departure so you don't lose the coordinates for meeting the guide.

How to get to the river on your own: routes for independent travelers

You can get to the Ili River by bus No. 303 from Sayakhat bus station to Bakanas village (2–2.5 hours, about 500 KZT), to Turgen by minibus from Barlyk market to Turgen village (1–1.5 hours, 600–800 KZT). If driving your own car — to Bakanas via the A-3 highway (120 km, asphalt to the village), to Turgen via the Kulzhinsky tract (80 km, last 10 km are unpaved). Parking at the starting point is free, but at Bakanas there are no cameras; at Turgen there is a barrier from the local housing cooperative — don't leave valuables in the car. On bus No. 303, note: the return trip from Bakanas departs at 16:30, and the kayaking ends around 16:00–17:00 — if you're late on the water, you'll have to hitch a ride to the highway.

Airport transfer: for visiting tourists

If you're flying into Almaty — toor can arrange airport transfer to the meeting point for 6000 KZT per group (up to 8 people), with a sign at the arrivals area at exit No. 4. The driver waits up to 40 minutes after passenger landing, even if luggage is delayed or passport control takes longer than usual. Order the transfer at least 24 hours before the tour — we'll adjust the departure time to your flight so you make the 8:00 briefing. For groups of 3–4 people, it's cheaper to order a taxi to the Kazakhstan Hotel (Yandex.Taxi — about 3000–4000 KZT) and then join the group transfer — the saved difference will cover lunch on the kayaking trip.

Common mistakes of beginner kayakers and how to avoid them

In 5 years of work, we've seen hundreds of beginners — and almost all make the same mistakes. We've compiled the top 5 so you don't repeat them on your first trip.

Mistake 1: wrong clothing — cotton instead of synthetics

The most common mistake is cotton clothing: jeans and t-shirts get wet, become heavy and cold, which can lead to hypothermia even at +20°C. A wet cotton t-shirt weighs 4-5 times more than dry — at 200 g dry, it pulls almost 1 kg when wet, conducts heat away from the body 10 times faster than synthetics, and with wind at 5 m/s, you start shivering after 30 minutes. Polyester or nylon, on the other hand, don't absorb water — droplets roll off the fabric, and even after complete submersion, the material remains light and retains thermal insulation. If you accidentally fall in, after 15-20 minutes in the sun, synthetics are almost dry, and you continue the route comfortably.

Mistake 2: fear of capsizing and incorrect boarding

Beginners often board a kayak from the shore by stepping on the edge — this is the most common cause of capsizing even before starting; the correct way is to enter the water up to your knees and sit down from the water. An experienced guide demonstrates the technique: with one hand hold the kayak by the edge line, with the other push off the bottom with the paddle, sit on the seat, and only then bring your legs inside — after 2-3 attempts, the movement becomes automatic, and you stop fearing even a slight rock from a passing boat. During the briefing, the guide explains that the life jacket keeps you afloat without movement, and the kayak doesn't sink — it's filled with air and stays afloat; you'll simply be picked up by the accompanying kayak.

Mistake 3: underestimating the sun and lack of protection

On the water, the sun burns 2-3 times stronger than on land due to reflection from the water — even on a cloudy day, you can get a burn in 40-60 minutes without protection. Ultraviolet rays reflect off the river surface at an angle, hitting exposed areas of the face, neck, and hands from two sides: above and below, increasing radiation dose by 2.5-3 times compared to the shore — the Almaty sun from April to September is especially active due to the altitude of 700-1000 m above sea level. SPF 50+ should be applied 20 minutes before the start and reapplied every 2 hours; a brimmed hat and polarized sunglasses are mandatory — glare from the water severely strains the eyes and hinders orientation on river turns.

Mistake 4: ignoring the briefing and safety rules

Before each trip, toor conducts a mandatory 15-minute briefing: how to sit in the kayak, how to paddle, what to do if you capsize — skipping it is the main mistake of beginners. The briefing covers three key scenarios: capsizing in calm water (swim out, hold onto the kayak, wait for the escort), capsizing in a rapid (assume the fetal position, don't flail, let the life jacket push you to the surface), getting stuck on rocks (don't stand up in the kayak, lean towards the rock and push off with the paddle). After the briefing, you know that the life jacket keeps you afloat even without movement, and the kayak doesn't sink — it's filled with air and stays afloat; you'll simply be picked up by the accompanying kayak.

Mistake 5: bringing extra items that are afraid of water

Phone, keys, wallet without a dry bag — the first things beginners lose when capsizing; experienced travelers pack everything in a waterproof roll-top backpack that withstands full submersion to a depth of 1 meter for 30 minutes. Pockets don't even protect against splashes — after 10 minutes of active paddling, a phone in jeans gets damp, and after an hour stops working, whereas a dry bag saves not only from drowning but also from an accidental wave from a passing motorboat or a sharp maneuver.

Conclusion

Kayaking from Almaty is an adventure accessible to everyone if you know the key points of route selection and preparation. We've gathered the main points.

Key takeaways

  • Price: The cost of a kayaking trip with transfer and lunch ranges from 15,000 to 35,000 KZT, with no hidden fees for equipment and insurance.
  • Route: Beginners should choose the Kapchagay Reservoir (calm water), experienced — the Ili River with class 1-2 rapids.
  • Safety: Life jackets, pre-start briefing, and guide accompaniment are mandatory; without them, the trip does not begin.
  • Mistakes: Cotton clothing, lack of sun protection, and extra items without a dry bag are the three main problems that ruin beginners' enjoyment.
  • Season: The best time for such a trip in Kazakhstan is from May to September, when the water is comfortable and rain is rare.
