Rafting from Almaty: 5 routes for beginners and pros

SV
Author: Sergey Volkov
Instructor, ski tours
Published: Updated: 17 min read

At toor, we organize boat rafting trips from Almaty on the Ili, Charyn, and Turgen rivers. For beginners, the one-day 'Ili-Bora' route with Class 1-2 rapids is ideal, starting from 3,263 KZT per person. The price includes transfer, guide, insurance, lunch, and all equipment. The season runs from May to October.

How to Choose a River for Rafting: Ili, Charyn, or Turgen?

The main question for beginners is where to go for an exciting but not scary experience. For those seeking rafting in Almaty with professional guidance, the 'Ili-Bora' route is the perfect start. Let's break down the three rivers of the Almaty region by difficulty, scenery, and type of adventure.

Ili — The Ideal Start for Your First Rafting Trip

Rafting on the Ili from Almaty is the most popular choice for a first rafting experience. We recommend the 'Ili-Bora' route for beginners: 25 km with Class 1-2 rapids that provide adrenaline without real danger. Hyside rafts with self-bailing floors handle these rapids steadily—even if you've never held a paddle before, the instructor at the stern guides you through every section. A wetsuit is only needed in May and September when water temperatures drop below +18°C; during peak season, a life jacket and helmet (provided to all participants) suffice. Departure from the city at 7:00 AM, lunch on the riverbank with hot tea included, return by 6:00 PM—you'll still have time for evening plans. On the Ili, you'll learn to read the water, paddle as a team, and feel the boat—skills that will come in handy on more challenging rivers.

Charyn — A Scenic Route for Those Seeking Impressions

The 'Charyn Canyon' rafting trip is a two-day route with Class 2-3 rapids, where the main highlight is the 200-meter-high sheer canyon walls. The water here is colder (+14..+16°C even in summer), so a wetsuit is mandatory—we provide it at no extra cost, along with tents and sleeping pads for overnight stays. The rapids are shorter than on the Ili but more varied: smooth riffles and short drops of up to 1 meter provide an adrenaline boost without the risk of capsizing. The route starts at the dam; the first 5 km are calm water with canyon views, followed by 15-20 km of rapids. An overnight stay on the shore with a campfire and tents turns the trip into a full-fledged adventure, not just a river descent.

Turgen — For Experienced Riders

The 'Turgen Extreme' route is for prepared participants with Class 3-5 rapids, where the water literally boils on waves up to 2 meters high. The boats travel in tandem—two Neptune catamarans linked by a rope to prevent capsizing when entering a hole. The guide on the front boat directs maneuvers with voice and whistle commands. The 15-20 km route takes 4-5 hours of active paddling without photo stops—only short breaks on calm stretches. On the Turgen, we require mandatory briefing and prior experience with Class 1-2 rapids; this is not a route for a checkbox but a true extreme adventure.

Rafting Prices from Almaty: What's Included and How to Avoid Overpaying

Rafting prices range from 3,000 to 170,000 KZT. Let's break down what makes up the cost of each tour and what you're actually paying for.

What's Included in Any toor Rafting Trip

Every rafting trip includes transfer from Almaty (departure at 7:00 AM), a certified guide, accident insurance on the water, lunch (hot meal, tea, sandwiches), and full equipment. Hyside and NRS rafts, Neptune catamarans, and Carlisle paddles are all included—no need to buy anything extra. For routes with Class 2-3 rapids (Charyn), wetsuits are provided when water temperature is below +18°C, which is rare in July-August on the Ili. Transfer is by minibus to the start point and back to the city, with no extra charges for mileage. We are a direct tour operator, so our prices have no aggregator or intermediary markups—you pay for real services, not a 'brand' on a website.

How to Save on Rafting: Group Discounts and Special Offers

We offer a 10% discount for groups of 8 or more, reducing the cost of the Ili-Bora rafting trip to 2,937 KZT/person and the Charyn Canyon trip to 17,010 KZT/person. In practice, a group of 10 on the Ili saves 3,263 KZT in total—enough for drone video footage (6,000 KZT/group). The discount is applied automatically when booking; no promo codes needed. If there are four of you, you can book a private tour on kayaks or catamarans—the price will be higher than the group rate, but you'll get a fully personalized route without strangers in your boat.

Water Safety: Briefing, Gear, and Emergency Procedures

Fear is the main barrier for beginners. Let's break down how safety works on rafting trips: from mandatory briefing to a clear plan if the boat capsizes.

Mandatory Pre-Rafting Briefing: What You'll Learn

Before each rafting trip, our guide conducts a mandatory 20-minute briefing: how to sit in the boat, how to paddle, what to do on commands like 'back paddle' and 'hold,' and how to behave on rapids. We cover three types of commands: 'back paddle' (paddle backward to brake or turn), 'hold' (lift the paddle above water to avoid hitting a rock), and 'lean in' (lean into the boat toward the wave to prevent capsizing). On the shore, we practice getting into the raft: feet braced against the inflated thwarts, body slightly forward, paddle held with one hand on the blade and the other on the T-grip. We demonstrate how to shift body position when hitting a wave—don't stand up, don't grab the sides, keep your center of gravity low. Each participant sits in the boat and simulates paddling to avoid panic on the water—on the Ili with Class 1-2 rapids, this becomes a practiced skill.

Safety Gear: What We Provide and What to Bring

  • Life Jacket: Self-inflating or foam, with side straps and a crotch strap—provided to each participant before boarding.
  • Helmet: Plastic with shock-absorbing inserts, mandatory on all routes, even on the Ili with Class 1-2 rapids.
  • Wetsuit: Neoprene, 3-5 mm thick, provided when water temperature is below +18°C—mandatory on the Charyn in May or September.
  • Dry Bag: 30-40 liters, for phone, keys, and dry clothes—provided free of charge, but it's best to pack items in a double zip-lock bag inside.
  • Carlisle Paddle: Nylon blade with aluminum shaft, lighter than wooden alternatives and non-sinking—standard for all Hyside and NRS boats in our fleet.

What to Do If the Boat Capsizes: A Beginner's Algorithm

If the boat capsizes, the main rule is not to panic, don't let go of the paddle, and hold onto the boat: the life jacket keeps you afloat, and the guide immediately begins evacuation. The algorithm: first, take a breath and look around—assess where the other participants and the guide are; then swim to the boat's side and grab the safety line around the raft; if you can't see the guide, shout 'Help!' and raise the paddle vertically as a signal. The guide on a motorboat or kayak approaches the overturned raft, throws a line, and pulls participants out one by one—this takes 2-3 minutes on calm water. On our routes, the guide-to-participant ratio is 1:6, so the instructor can physically monitor everyone—on the Ili with its Class 1-2 rapids, capsizing is extremely unlikely, but we teach you to act in any scenario.

Water Insurance: What It Covers and How It Works

All our tours include accident insurance on the water—it covers medical evacuation from the rafting site to the nearest medical facility, initial treatment of injuries (bruises, fractures, dislocations), and transportation to Almaty in case of serious injury. The coverage amount is up to 500,000 KZT per person, valid from the start to the end of the rafting trip with no deductible: you pay nothing when filing a claim; all expenses are covered by the insurance company. For multi-day routes (e.g., 'Ili to Balkhash' over 5 days), night evacuation coverage is added—helicopter or motorboat is dispatched via a unified dispatch center. If you plan several days of active water recreation in Almaty, additionally take out travel insurance—it will cover incidents not related to water (hiking, horseback riding, insect bites).

Boat Types Comparison: Raft, Kayak, or Catamaran?

Rafts, kayaks, and catamarans offer completely different experiences. We explain how they differ and which type to choose based on your needs.

Raft — Stability and Team Spirit

We use inflatable rafts from Hyside and NRS—the most stable boats for groups of 4 to 8 people, ideal for beginners and family trips on the Ili. High sides and a flat bottom make the raft nearly uncapsizable on Class 1-2 rapids, and seating accommodates a standard group with one guide. The displacement of these boats allows carrying extra provisions and thermoses even on a one-day 25 km route like the Ili-Bora section. On a raft, you work as a team: the guide gives commands, and everyone paddles in sync—this creates a shared thrill that you don't get on a solo kayak.

Catamaran — Maneuverability and Gear Space

Catamaran rafting in Almaty is ideal for multi-day trips on the Charyn and to Balkhash. Neptune catamarans consist of two inflatable pontoons connected by a frame: they are more maneuverable than rafts and carry more gear, making them perfect for multi-day trips on the Charyn and to Balkhash. Two independent tubes provide extra stability on Class 2-3 rapids, and the metal frame allows securing dry bags with tents and sleeping bags without risk of losing gear during a capsize. We use catamarans on overnight routes—at campsites, the boat can be disassembled in 15 minutes, and the pontoons serve as mattresses. Catamarans are more comfortable on long calm stretches—you can paddle at your own pace rather than in sync with the group, reducing fatigue on expedition routes.

Kayak — For Experienced and Private Tours

Kayak rafting in Almaty is suitable for experienced participants who want full control over the route. We offer kayaks for private tours—a boat for one or two experienced participants who want complete control over the route and speed. A closed cockpit and low center of gravity provide high speed on straight sections but require the skill of an Eskimo roll when capsizing—this is critical for beginners on rapids above Class 2. You can book a kayak tour on the Ili accompanied by an instructor on a motorboat or raft, with gear transported separately. On a kayak, you go without a guide in the boat (the instructor accompanies on a separate raft), so at least minimal paddling experience and confident behavior on the water are required.

Seasonality of Rafting in the Almaty Region: When to Go and What to Wear

The rafting season in the region runs from May to October, but each month has its own features in terms of water temperature, tourist flow, and price. Water trips in Almaty are available from May to October, but each month has its own specifics regarding water temperature and tourist flow. Let's break down when to go for warmth and when for golden autumn.

May-June: Cold Water, Few Tourists, and Wetsuit Required

In May-June, the water temperature on the Ili and Charyn stays at +14..+17°C, so we provide wetsuits for all participants—this is a mandatory condition for comfort and safety. Water flow is at its maximum due to snowmelt in the mountains: rapids become fuller, and the current speed reaches 5-6 km/h compared to 3-4 km/h in midsummer. The perceived difficulty of Class 1-2 routes is higher due to the fast current, but it's not dangerous for beginners with proper gear. The advantage of the early season is minimal tourist numbers on the river: on the 'Ili-Bora' route on a weekday, there may be one or two groups instead of ten in August.

July-August: Peak Season, Warm Water, and Maximum Sun

July-August is peak season: water warms up to +20°C, no wetsuit needed, and daylight allows up to 8 hours on the water—from 9:00 AM to sunset around 7:30 PM. In heat up to +35°C, a hat, SPF 50+ sunscreen, and at least 1.5 liters of water per person are mandatory—on the water, the risk of sunburn is higher than on land due to UV reflection from the river surface. During this time, tours should be booked 2-3 weeks in advance—groups for 'Ili-Bora' and 'Charyn Canyon' fill up 3-4 days before the departure date.

September-October: Golden Autumn, Discounts, and Calm Water

In September-October, water cools to +15..+17°C, but the main attraction is the golden landscapes of the Charyn and Turgen canyons, which look especially stunning due to the contrast of yellow poplar leaves and red rocks. Water levels drop by 30-40% compared to May, and the current becomes calmer—this makes routes comfortable even for those afraid of fast water. At the end of the season, we often offer discounts of up to 15% on group tours, and there are almost no other tourists on the rivers—an ideal time for those who value solitude and photos without people in the frame.

Rafting with Children and Large Groups: Conditions, Discounts, and Restrictions

These trips are not just for adults seeking thrills. We explain the minimum age for children, how groups are formed, and what discounts apply to large companies.

Children on Rafting: Minimum Age and Suitable Routes

We allow children from age 7 on Class 1-2 difficulty routes—these are the 'Ili-Bora' trip and the first part of 'Charyn Canyon,' where there are no dangerous rapids or strong currents. For children aged 7-12, we provide smaller life jackets (children's sizes with additional shoulder straps) that stay secure during boat maneuvers. A parent must sit in the same boat next to the child—the guide manages the group but cannot simultaneously monitor each young participant. Teenagers aged 12 and up on calm Ili sections can try paddling independently under the instructor's supervision, but on the Charyn with Class 2-3 rapids, they remain passengers. Before booking, confirm the child's weight: life jackets are designed for children from 20 kg; if lighter, the wetsuit and jacket may not keep them afloat.

Group Size and Comfort: How Many People Per Boat

Our groups range from 4 to 12 people, with 6-8 participants plus a guide per raft—this is the optimal number for maneuverability and ensuring everyone feels their role in the team. With 4-5 participants, the raft moves faster but requires more active paddling; with 10-12, the boat is more stable but maneuverability decreases on turns. If you want more space and individual attention, you can book a catamaran tour (4-6 people) or a kayak (1-2 people)—the price will be higher, but comfort and personalization are maximized.

Discounts for Large Groups and Corporate Events

For groups of 8 or more, we offer a 10% discount on any route—this reduces the cost of the 'Ili-Bora' trip to 2,937 KZT/person and 'Charyn Canyon' to 17,010 KZT/person. The discount is applied automatically when booking 8+ seats on the website; no need to request it separately. Corporate groups of 12 or more can book a tour with a customized program: we add water competitions, team challenges, and drone video footage (6,000 KZT/group) for a final highlight reel. For such orders, it's best to write or call a week in advance—coordinating dates that work for all employees takes time.

Multi-Day Rafting with Overnight Stays: What to Know About Routes and Camp Life

A multi-day expedition is not just a boat ride but a full-fledged adventure with overnight stays, campfire cooking, and tent living. We break down what awaits you.

Charyn Canyon Route: A Two-Day Adventure with Overnight Stay

The Charyn Canyon rafting trip lasts two days and includes an overnight stay in tents on the riverbank. The 'Charyn Canyon' rafting trip is two days on the water with an overnight in tents on the riverbank: we provide tents, sleeping bags, mats, and cook dinner over a campfire (full board included in the 18,900 KZT/person cost). The first day is an active section with Class 2-3 rapids, where the boat passes through canyon narrowings with water drops of up to half a meter. The second day is a calmer stretch with stops for photos of the Charyn Canyon cliffs, which at sunset look like movie sets. Dinner on the shore includes a hot meal (pilaf or shurpa), tea with pastries—all cooked over a campfire, not a gas stove. Before the trip, check your power bank charge—there are no outlets at the campsites, and a drone for aerial footage (6,000 KZT per group) drains its battery in two flights.

Expedition 'Ili to Balkhash': 5 Days on the Water

The five-day 'Ili to Balkhash' route is a 120 km expedition from the Kapshagay Dam to the Ili Delta, where the river flows into Lake Balkhash, with full board and overnight stays in wild locations. The route passes through uninhabited areas with no cell service, and at night you can see the Milky Way—no campsites with showers or electricity, just tents and a campfire. Meals are three times a day with hot lunch at stops (soup, main course, compote), dinner cooked over a campfire, and breakfast with porridge and sandwiches. The guide accompanies groups of 4 to 10 people, with a ratio of one instructor per 6 participants. Such a trip is suitable for groups seeking full immersion in nature: bring a dry bag for personal belongings—even on a dry day, water splashes into the boat 5-10 cm on rapids.

Conclusion

Rafting from Almaty is an accessible adventure suitable for both beginners and experienced travelers, provided you choose the right route and gear. Here are the main takeaways to help you plan your trip without mistakes.

Key Takeaways

  • Choose a route based on experience: for first-timers, one-day rafting on the Ili or Kaskelen is suitable; for experienced, multi-day expeditions with rapids.
  • Check what's included in the price: transfer, meals, equipment, and insurance are the basic package that should be included.
  • Consider the age and fitness of the group: children are allowed from age 6-7 on calm routes; corporate groups have custom programs.
  • Safety is a priority: life jackets, briefing, and an experienced guide are mandatory for any rafting trip, regardless of difficulty.
  • Plan logistics in advance: most routes start 60-120 km from Almaty; transfer is usually included or available for an extra fee.
