Extreme Adventures from Almaty: 7 Routes for Adrenaline — from Rafting to Paragliding

Looking for an extreme getaway from Almaty? At toor, we are a direct tour operator: we organize rafting on the Ili River, jeep tours to Charyn Canyon, trekking to Big Almaty Lake, zip-lining, canyoning, and paragliding. Transport, equipment, insurance, and certified EMERCOM guides are included. Prices start from 3263 KZT per person.

How to choose a tour based on your fitness level

A beginner's main fear is not being able to handle the physical load or danger. We break down which route suits each level: from zero experience to a confident hiker.

What difficulty categories exist in toor tours

All our routes are divided into 5 difficulty categories—from easy (Category 1) to high (Category 5)—so every participant can choose a route matching their fitness level. Category 1: zip-lining in the Turgen Gorge, 500 meters long: you are clipped to a cable, the guide controls the descent, minimal physical effort. Zip-lining Almaty in the Turgen Gorge, 500 meters long—an ideal start for beginners with no physical training. Category 2: trekking to Big Almaty Lake (2511 m): the route lasts 6-8 hours with elevation gain, but the pace is comfortable with stops every 30-40 minutes. Trekking Almaty to Big Almaty Lake (2511 m)—a route for those who want to combine movement and scenic views. Hiking Almaty to Big Almaty Lake—a classic for those wanting to see the Zailiysky Alatau. Category 3: rafting on the Ili River with Class II-III rapids, requiring basic paddling skills. Rafting Almaty on the Ili River with Class II-III rapids—the optimal choice for a first experience with extreme sports. Categories 4 and 5: jeep tour to Charyn Canyon (depth 300 m) and paragliding over the Assy Plateau (height 2000 m)—available only after a consultation with a guide. For beginners with no experience, we recommend starting with Category 1-2—zip-lining in the Turgen Gorge or trekking to Big Almaty Lake, which require no special physical training.

Which route should a beginner choose: rafting, jeep tour, or trekking

For a first time, we suggest a jeep tour to Charyn Canyon—a spectacular route with no physical exertion, as the guide drives the vehicle, and the canyon depth reaches 300 meters. The drive from the city takes 3 hours—during which the guide narrates the canyon's history and shows viewpoints. Jeep tours Almaty to Charyn Canyon—the most spectacular option without physical strain. If you want active participation, choose trekking to Big Almaty Lake—the route lasts 6-8 hours with an elevation gain to 2511 m, but the pace is comfortable even for the unprepared. Rafting on the Ili with Class II-III rapids is a third option: it delivers adrenaline but requires instruction and full gear (helmet, life jacket, wetsuit) provided by the guide. Trekking is the compromise between the scenic jeep tour and the active rafting, which is why it's often chosen by those who want both movement and sightseeing.

What to do if you want extreme but are scared

We have specially designed rafting on the Ili River with Class II-III rapids for beginners—the guide gives instructions, provides full gear (helmet, life jacket, wetsuit), and the group goes under the supervision of a certified EMERCOM instructor. The route starts on calm water where you practice paddling, and only after 20-30 minutes do you reach the first rapids—this reduces panic and helps you get used to the raft. Groups are up to 12 people, minimum age is 12, and before starting, each participant signs an insurance policy included in the tour price. The most common feedback after the first rafting: 'I was scared for nothing—I want more.' Adrenaline is present, but safety comes first: groups up to 12 people, minimum age 12, and the trip can be rescheduled to another day without penalty.

Top 5 routes for adrenaline: from rafting to paragliding

Almaty's mountains and rivers offer seven types of activities—from fast rapids to flights over plateaus. Here are the five most popular routes with specific parameters for selection.

Comparison of the top 5 extreme tours by toor

RouteDifficulty (1–5)DurationPrice from, KZT/personWhat's included
Rafting on the Ili River (Class II–IV rapids)36–8 hours (day trip)3263Transport, equipment, EMERCOM guide, insurance
Jeep tour to Charyn Canyon (300 m)16–8 hours (day trip)3263Transport, guide-driver, insurance
Trekking to Big Almaty Lake (2511 m)26–8 hours (day trip)3263Transport, trekking poles, guide, insurance
Zip-lining in Turgen Gorge (500 m)14–5 hours (day trip)3263Transport, equipment, instructor, insurance
Paragliding over the Assy Plateau (2000 m)24–5 hours (day trip)3263Transport, paraglider, instructor, insurance

For a first extreme experience, choose zip-lining or a jeep tour—they require no preparation, while paragliding needs good weather and light wind.

Which tour to choose for a group of friends

For companies of up to 12 people, we recommend rafting on the Ili—it's a team sport where everyone paddles, and the emotions after the rapids bring people together better than any team building. Class II–IV rapids provide a dose of adrenaline without serious danger: the guide-instructor with an EMERCOM certificate sits at the stern and steers the boat, while participants paddle on command. The route is a day trip, 6-8 hours including the drive from the city (1.5 hours to the river), lunch, and the 12 km rafting itself. If the group includes both beginners and experienced members, choose the jeep tour to Charyn—it suits all levels, and along the way you can stop for photos against the backdrop of the 300-meter deep canyon.

Can you combine two tours in one day

Yes, we put together combined itineraries—for example, a morning trek to Big Almaty Lake plus an afternoon zip-line in the Turgen Gorge, but such a day lasts 10-12 hours. Trekking takes 3-4 hours with an elevation gain to 2511 m, and zip-lining takes another 2 hours including the transfer (40 minutes between points). You can make it to the lake and the flight over the gorge, but you'll be tired by evening—the elevation difference for the day is almost 1500 m. Combining rafting and trekking in one day is physically demanding—both routes require energy. It's better to spread them over different days or choose a pair like 'zip-line + jeep tour'.

Are there tours for children and teenagers

Our minimum age for rafting is 12, and for trekking and jeep tours it's 10 when accompanied by adults, and we provide children's gear (smaller helmets, life jackets). Teenagers aged 12-15 sit in the center of the raft between adult paddlers—they get the adrenaline but don't take on the paddling load. For trekking to Big Almaty Lake (8 km one way, 400 m elevation gain), children aged 10-13 walk at their own pace, with the guide stopping every 30-40 minutes. For families with children, we recommend the jeep tour to Charyn Canyon or zip-lining in Turgen—they are safe, spectacular, and don't require endurance, and the guide adjusts the pace to the group.

Price comparison: day trips vs. multi-day tours

Price is the main question when choosing a tour. We break down how much extreme recreation from Almaty really costs, what's included, and when a multi-day tour is more cost-effective than a day trip.

What's included in a day tour

A day tour costs from 3263 KZT per person—this price already includes transport from the city, all equipment (helmet, life jacket, wetsuit or trekking poles), participant insurance, and the work of a certified EMERCOM guide. On a 6-8 hour route, groups of up to 12 people receive a full set of gear specific to the activity: for rafting on the Ili—helmet and life jacket, for trekking to Big Almaty Lake (2511 m)—trekking poles, for canyoning in the Kokpek Gorge—a wetsuit. Transport reaches any starting point within a 60 km radius from the city—from the Turgen Gorge to the Assy Plateau. No additional charges along the way—the price is fixed; you can only order lunch at a cafe on the route (from 1500 KZT) as an extra.

Why a multi-day tour can be more cost-effective

A 5-day multi-day tour with rafting, trekking, jeep tour, zip-lining, and paragliding costs from 12500 KZT—if you book these same activities separately, it would be about 16315 KZT (5 × 3263 KZT). The difference of 3815 KZT is explained by logistics: with day trips, each time you pay for a separate transfer from the city to the starting point and back, and the guide spends 2-3 hours on the road instead of working on the route. The Almaty gorges—Turgen, Kokpek, Charyn Canyon—are scattered 40-80 km apart, and it's physically impossible to cover more than two points in one day. Savings come from the fact that transport, accommodation, and meals are 'shared' across all days, and the guide works with the group continuously without additional trips from the city.

Seasonality of extreme tours from Almaty: when and where to go

Not all activities are available year-round—seasonality is dictated by weather, water levels in rivers, and the condition of mountain trails. We've broken down by month when to plan rafting, trekking, and paragliding.

When is the best time for rafting and when for trekking

The best time for rafting on the Ili is July and August, when the water warms up to +15..+18°C, and the Class II-IV rapids are at their most powerful and spectacular after glacier melt. In May-June, the flow is turbulent, but the temperature stays at +8..+10°C—a wetsuit is mandatory, otherwise you'll freeze within an hour of rafting. By September, the water level drops by 30-40%, and the rapids become less intense—this suits beginners who want to try rafting without extreme conditions. Trekking to Big Almaty Lake is best in September: daytime temperatures of +15..+20°C, no summer heat, and the foliage around the lake turns golden, providing the best shots for photo reports. In June-July, at an altitude of 2500 m, there are still remnants of snow on northern slopes—bring trekking poles and a windbreaker; the temperature difference during the day can reach 10°C. Trekking is also available in October, but at the start at 8 a.m., the thermometer shows +2..+5°C—without thermal underwear and a down vest, it will be uncomfortable.

Which tours are available in October and November

In October, trekking to Big Almaty Lake, jeep tours to Charyn Canyon, and paragliding over the Assy Plateau continue—these routes operate until the first snowfalls (usually until mid-November). Paragliding in October is particularly good: clear air provides visibility up to 50 km, the Ili Valley is visible below, and thermals are stable until 3 p.m.—after noon, the wind picks up, and flights stop. Paragliding Almaty over the Assy Plateau (2000 m)—a flight you'll remember for a lifetime. The jeep tour to Charyn in late autumn has a bonus: there are 2-3 times fewer tourists than in summer, and there are no queues at viewpoints. In November, only jeep tours and zip-lining in the Turgen Gorge remain—these activities do not depend on temperature, as long as there is no ice on the track. Rafting and trekking close until the next season: the water in the Ili cools to +4°C, and the trails to Big Almaty Lake are covered with the first snow as early as late October.

What to bring for an extreme vacation: a complete checklist

Proper gear is half the success. We've compiled a checklist of items to bring on a trip from Almaty, and explained what we provide for free.

What toor provides for free: a complete list of equipment

We provide each participant with a full set of gear: helmet, life jacket, wetsuit for rafting, trekking poles for hikes—all included in the tour price. Petzl Vertex helmets and life jackets with a lifting capacity of 75-100 kg undergo annual certification. Wetsuits are 5 mm thick with sealed seams, no water entry on Class II-IV rapids on the Ili. Trekking poles are aluminum telescopic Black Diamond with length adjustment for height. Canyoning Almaty in the Kokpek Gorge—a descent along waterfalls with a full set of gear from the guide. For canyoning in the Kokpek Gorge, we additionally provide hydro-boots with a hard sole and a safety harness. The wetsuit is especially important for rafting in May-June, when the water in the Ili is still cold (+8..+12°C)—it retains heat even when wet, and you won't freeze during the 6-8 hour rafting trip.

Checklist: what to bring on the tour

  • Footwear: Trekking boots with high ankle support—for climbing Almaty Peak, ankle fixation is needed; sneakers slip on scree.
  • Clothing: Windbreaker or membrane jacket—protection from wind during paragliding over the Assy Plateau and from splashes during rafting.
  • Sun protection: SPF 50+ sunscreen and a hat—at altitudes of 2000-3000 m, UV burns even in cloudy weather.
  • Water and food: 1-1.5 liters of water and a light snack (nuts, bars, dried fruit)—on routes to Big Almaty Lake and Charyn, there are no food points.
  • Change of clothes: A dry set (t-shirt, pants, socks)—to change after canyoning or rafting to avoid freezing in the car on the way back.
  • Tech: A charged phone and a 10,000 mAh power bank—in the Turgen and Kokpek gorges, signal is only available on higher ground.
  • Documents: Passport or ID card—for insurance registration and border zone registration near Big Almaty Lake.

How to prepare for climbing Almaty Peak

Climbing Almaty Peak (3680 m, 5A category) requires basic physical fitness—you can sign up for the tour, but we recommend starting cardio (running, cycling, swimming) and leg exercises (squats, lunges, step-ups) 2-3 weeks before the trip, 30-40 minutes a day. The route starts from the Kok-Zhaylyau tract (1700 m) and goes over scree and snowfields with an elevation gain of almost 2000 m in 6-8 hours. Without prior training, your heart rate on the last 300 m of ascent will exceed 160 bpm, and your muscles will start trembling with every step. On the route, we make stops every 30-40 minutes for acclimatization—a sharp gain in altitude without adaptation can cause altitude sickness (dizziness, nausea), so the pace is calm, under the guide's control.

Safety in extreme tours: how we insure and train guides

Safety is the main concern for beginners. We explain how direct organizers train guides, insure participants, and control routes so you feel confident.

Who conducts the tours: certified EMERCOM guides

Certified EMERCOM guides under the 'Guide in Extreme Tourism' program are a mandatory requirement for our instructors: each undergoes annual re-certification, mountain first aid courses, and a practical exam on the routes of Charyn Canyon and Bogdanovich Glacier, where skills in rock and water rescue are tested. Out of 50 candidates per season, no more than 8 pass the interview and trial tour—the selection is stricter than aggregators who hire external contractors without personal verification. On the route, the guide leads a group of up to 12 participants, controls intervals on ascents above 3000 meters, and checks pulse at key points. In 5 years of operation, we have had no serious incidents—the instructor doesn't just show the way but assesses the condition of each group member and decides whether to continue the tour if the weather worsens.

Participant insurance: what it covers and how to apply

Insurance for each participant is included in the tour price—it covers accidents, emergency evacuation from mountainous areas, and medical transport to a city hospital up to 500,000 KZT, with no standard exclusions by activity type: rafting on the Ili (Class II–IV rapids), trekking to Big Almaty Lake (2511 m), and paragliding over the Assy Plateau (2000 m) are covered without extra charges. The insurance company is a specialized operator for active tourism, not a general insurer, so the contract includes helicopter evacuation by Kazaviaspas for injuries at altitude. Registration is automatic upon booking—you don't need to fill out forms or pay separately; the policy is emailed immediately after payment, with no exclusions for mountaineering or rafting.

Route and weather control: when a tour is canceled

Each route has a backup plan—if the weather worsens (thunderstorm, strong wind, snowfall), the guide redirects the group to an alternative trek or returns to the city, and the trip is rescheduled for another day without penalty. For jeep tours to Charyn Canyon, the backup is a viewpoint overlooking the valley instead of descending to the bottom if the ground is washed out by rain; for rafting on the Ili, it's trekking along the bank with stops at the rapids. The decision to cancel is made by the guide on-site after checking the Kazhydromet forecast—if a storm warning is issued within 50 km of the route, the group does not leave the city. In 5 years, we have postponed 12 tours due to weather, and all participants received a full refund or rescheduling without extra charges—this is a strict rule that is not violated even for fully paid groups.

Conclusion

Extreme recreation from Almaty offers dozens of routes for every taste and budget. The main thing is to approach the choice consciously, assessing your strength, budget, and season.

Key takeaways

  • Beginners—start with Category 2 rafting or trekking to Big Almaty Lake: these tours require no special training and provide a basic experience of adrenaline adventures without overwhelming your psyche.
  • Budget—day trips cost from 15,000 to 35,000 KZT per person, including transport, equipment, and insurance; prices are fixed with no hidden charges, convenient for trip planning.
  • Safety—choose tours with certified EMERCOM guides and insurance covering mountain evacuation; this is a mandatory minimum for any route, whether rafting on the Ili or climbing Furmanov Peak.
  • Gear—for most tours, trekking boots and a waterproof jacket are sufficient; the rest (helmets, life jackets, ice axes) are provided by the organizer, saving you 10,000-15,000 KZT upfront.
  • Seasonality—rafting and paragliding are available from May to October; trekking and climbing are available year-round but require warm clothing and good physical fitness in winter to withstand winds on the ridges of the Zailiysky Alatau.
