Hunting in Kazakhstan from Almaty: 8 game species, prices, and a complete guide to organizing a tour

Hunting in Kazakhstan from Almaty — legal tours from toor with certified guides, full equipment (Tikka/Sauer rifles, Swarovski optics) and transfer by Toyota Land Cruiser 200. Prices range from 3,263 KZT/person for a pheasant hunting day to 167,983 KZT/person for a 10-day trophy tour for the mountain goat. We handle all paperwork ourselves.

What and Where to Hunt in Kazakhstan: 8 Game Species and Their Grounds

Kazakhstan is one of the few countries where you can hunt in the Tien Shan mountains, the Saryarka steppes, and the floodplains of major rivers in a single trip — hunting in the Tien Shan mountains requires good physical fitness. Let's break down what and where you can hunt from Almaty.

Trophy Hunting for the Mountain Goat (tau-teke) in the Trans-Ili Alatau

Through us, you can organize a hunt for the mountain goat (tau-teke) in the ridges of the Trans-Ili Alatau — this is the most prestigious trophy in Kazakhstan, a 10-day tour costs 167,983 KZT/person. Hunting for the mountain goat in Kazakhstan is the most prestigious trophy, available in the Trans-Ili Alatau. Trophy hunting in Kazakhstan for the mountain goat is the most prestigious trophy, a 10-day tour costs 167,983 KZT/person. The tau-teke lives at altitudes of 2500–4000 meters, in alpine meadows and rocky outcrops, where the Tikka T3x rifle with Swarovski Z8i optics provides an advantage at distances up to 400 meters. The season is from September 1 to November 30, with the peak of the rut in October when males gather harems and are less cautious. We start the route from the base camp at the Big Almaty Lake tract — the drive by Toyota Land Cruiser 200 takes 1.5 hours from the city. The tau-teke requires good physical fitness and acclimatization — at least one day before starting the route, otherwise the pulse at altitude disrupts a precise shot.

Hunting for Argali in the Tarbagatai and Saur Mountains

For argali, we travel to the Tarbagatai and Saur mountains in eastern Kazakhstan — this is the largest mountain sheep in Central Asia, the tour lasts 7–10 days. Hunting for argali in Kazakhstan is the largest mountain sheep in Central Asia, the tour lasts 7–10 days. The horn mass of a trophy male reaches 35–40 kg, and the distance from the base to the pastures is 80–120 km by UAZ Patriot on gravel roads without pavement. The argali is listed in the Red Book, so the shooting license is strictly limited — we submit an application 3–4 months before the season, which runs from August 1 to October 31. The wind in the steppe changes every 15–20 minutes, and the argali can smell a hunter from a kilometer away — approach is only possible from the leeward side along the ridge of a hill.

Wild Boar Hunting in the Ili River Floodplain and Balkhash Region

For wild boar, through us you can hunt in the Ili River floodplain and the Balkhash region — this is the most accessible large trophy, a 3-day tour costs from 61,900 KZT/person. Hunting for wild boar in Kazakhstan is the most accessible large trophy, available year-round. In the tugai thickets of the Ili, the boar stays near the water, coming out to feed at dusk. Hunting is done from a blind at the edge of rice paddies or by stalking with a dog — without it, it's almost impossible to raise a boar from its cover. The season is year-round, but from May to August only males are allowed — at this time, females have piglets, and shooting is prohibited. Norma Oryx 9.3×62 cartridges are the only caliber that stops a boar at close range when it bursts out of the thickets 15 meters away.

Wolf Hunting in the Saryarka Steppes

For wolves, through us you travel to the Saryarka steppes — hunting a pest without seasonal restrictions, possible at any time of year. Wolf hunting in Kazakhstan is hunting a pest without seasonal restrictions. The wolf in the steppe is the smartest animal: it avoids traps, doesn't approach baits during the day, and changes its den every 3–4 days, so hunting is done at night with a Pulsar Axion 2 XG35 thermal imager from a vehicle. During the day, vaboo is effective — howling on a call imitating the voice of a young wolf, but an experienced leader responds no more than once every three attempts. A shot at a wolf does not guarantee a kill — even a wounded animal can travel 10–15 km across the steppe, so a second group goes for interception 2–3 hours after the shot.

Ethno-Hunting with a Golden Eagle for Fox and Hare

Hunting with a golden eagle in Kazakhstan — ethno-hunting with a golden eagle for fox and hare is conducted from October to March through us. This is a unique format that can be combined with rifle hunting in one tour. The golden eagle is not just a bird, but a partner: it doesn't attack on command, but chooses the moment itself, launching from the berkutchi's hand to a height of 50–70 meters and diving at the fox at speeds up to 80 km/h. The hunt lasts 4–5 hours a day and requires a separate guide-berkutchi with the bird — this is not an excursion, but a full-fledged hunt with centuries-old techniques. Hunting with a golden eagle provides not a trophy, but a spectacle — the fox remains alive after the attack, and the berkutchi takes it for training a young bird.

Pheasant, Roe Deer, and Bear Hunting — Niche Tours

Through us, you can organize hunts for pheasant in the Syr Darya floodplain (1 day, from 3,263 KZT/person), roe deer in the Karatau mountains, and bear in the Tien Shan — under limited licenses. The pheasant in the Syr Darya floodplain stays in reed thickets and is somewhat reminiscent of a quail — it flushes from underfoot at 50–70 meters, shooting is done with shot No. 5–7 offhand. The roe deer in Karatau is a secretive animal; hunting it requires sitting at salt licks in the pre-dawn hours when fog spreads through the gorges. Bear hunting is the most challenging and expensive tour: a license is issued once a year for 2–3 individuals in the Tien Shan, booking must be made six months in advance, and a Sauer 101 rifle with Norma cartridges is the minimum required equipment to go after the animal.

Hunting Seasons in Kazakhstan: Calendar by Game Species

The hunting season in Kazakhstan is tied to the biology of each species — arriving at the wrong time, you risk finding empty grounds. We have compiled the current dates for all destinations so you can check the calendar before booking.

How to Choose the Time for Hunting: Season Tips

We recommend planning a trip for mountain goat in September-October — the snow hasn't covered the highlands yet, and the animal is active after summer feeding and reaches maximum weight. For argali, the optimal start is mid-August: dry weather in Tarbagatai allows working with optics at distances up to 400 meters without distortion from heated air. If your target is wild boar, the best window is November-December: after the first frosts, the tugai along the Ili thins out, trophy boars come out to feed in open clearings, and the animal is easier to take from a blind. Wolves are most effectively taken in January-February — on dense snow, tracks are as clear as a map, and bait works stably at minus 15–20 °C. For pheasant, choose October — it's still warm in the Syr Darya floodplain, and the birds have already gathered in flocks of 10–15, providing a good bag for the day.

How Much Does Hunting in Kazakhstan Cost: Price Breakdown and What's Included

Prices for hunting tours in Kazakhstan vary widely — from 3,263 KZT for a day of pheasant hunting to 167,983 KZT for a trophy tour for the mountain goat. Let's break down what makes up the cost and what you'll have to pay extra for.

The highest price is for the trophy mountain goat: 10 days include accommodation in lodges, full equipment, and transfer from Almaty.

What's Included in the Tour Price and What Requires Extra Payment

The price of all our tours includes transfer from Almaty, accommodation, the work of a certified guide, equipment (Tikka rifle, Norma cartridges, Swarovski optics), and participant insurance. Transfer is done by Toyota Land Cruiser 200 or UAZ Patriot — depending on the route's terrain: only an SUV goes into the Tien Shan mountains, while a UAZ goes to the Ili floodplain. Accommodation in hunting lodges with wood stove heating is included in multi-day tours; for one-day tours, only lunch in the field is included. Equipment is provided on-site: rifles in .308 Win or .30-06 caliber, zeroed for specific distances, with a supply of cartridges for 10–15 shots. Taxidermy (from 50,000 KZT for a mount), processing of trophy export documents, and additional days of accommodation are paid separately — these expenses rarely exceed 15–20% of the tour cost.

How to Save on a Hunting Tour: 3 Practical Ways

  • One-day pheasant tour: the most budget-friendly option for a beginner — 3,263 KZT/person for a full day: you get transfer, guide, cartridges, and lunch, without large investments.
  • Group booking for 3–4 people: when going for wild boar, the tour cost from 61,900 KZT/person is reduced by 20–25% due to shared transfer and accommodation — we offer a discount on group bookings.
  • Seasonal wolf hunting: this type is open year-round without license fees, so a 5-day tour is cheaper than a trophy mountain goat hunt — with comparable duration, the difference reaches 40–50%.

Documents for Hunting in Kazakhstan: What Needs to Be Arranged

For legal hunting in Kazakhstan, three documents are needed: a hunting license of the Republic of Kazakhstan, a weapons permit, and a shooting license. Let's break down how and where to get them.

Hunting License of the Republic of Kazakhstan: Where to Get It and How Much It Costs

We process the hunting license of the Republic of Kazakhstan through the territorial forestry inspection — the procedure takes 5–7 working days, cost 2,500 KZT. Documents are submitted to district departments: Almaty department at Zheltoksan Street, 133, Astana department at Kabanbai Batyr Avenue, 23; you need an ID, two 3×4 photos, and a receipt for the state fee payment. Online submission via eGov.kz is available, but you receive the original license in person. We prepare the package for foreigners — an invitation from the tour operator, a copy of the passport, and an application — and submit it 14 days before arrival. For citizens of Kazakhstan, the license is issued indefinitely; for foreigners, it is valid for the duration of the tour, but only with an invitation from the tour operator.

Weapons Permit and Shooting License

We process the weapons permit for each trip — it is valid only for the duration of the tour and for a specific game species, cost 3,000 KZT. The document specifies the rifle model (Tikka T3, Sauer 101), caliber (.308 Win, 6.5 Creedmoor), and barrel serial number — you cannot change weapons in the field. The shooting license is issued by the forestry inspection based on the tour operator's application: for mountain goat — 80,000 KZT, for argali — 120,000 KZT, for wild boar — 20,000 KZT, for wolf — free of charge as a pest. We check the quotas for the current season and reserve the license 30 days before the tour — for mountain goat in the Trans-Ili Alatau, the limit is only 15 animals per season. The shooting license for mountain goat or argali is the most expensive document: from 50,000 to 150,000 KZT depending on the species, and its quantity is strictly limited.

Documents for Foreigners: Processing Features

A foreign hunting license is not valid in Kazakhstan — we process a temporary RK license for the duration of the tour, for which a passport and two photos are needed. The procedure through us includes submitting an application to the territorial inspection, paying a state fee of 2,500 KZT, and receiving the ready license at the airport upon arrival. Additionally, a permit for importing weapons from the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan is required — we submit documents 30 days before the tour, service cost 10,000 KZT. The list of allowed weapons matches the Kazakhstani one: smoothbore 12–16 gauge and rifled for .243 Win cartridges and above. I recommend submitting the application at least 45 days in advance — during the peak season from August to September, the Ministry of Internal Affairs processes documents for up to 20 working days instead of the stated 10.

Hunting Equipment: What's Provided in the Tour and What to Bring Yourself

A full set of weapons, transport, and accommodation is included in the tour price. But three items from your personal arsenal remain your responsibility — especially for winter trips to the mountains.

Weapons and Optics: What We Provide in the Tour

In our tours, we provide Tikka T3 and Sauer 101 rifles with Swarovski Z5 optics — both in .308 Win caliber, optimal for mountain hunting for goat and argali. The Tikka T3 weighs 3.2 kg versus 3.5 kg for the Sauer 101: a 300-gram difference at 3000 meters altitude provides a noticeable energy saving during traverses over the rocky slopes of the Trans-Ili Alatau. However, the Sauer is more accurate at range — its match-grade barrel provides 0.5 MOA accuracy versus 0.75 MOA for the Tikka, which is critical for shooting argali at 350–400 meters in the open steppe of Tarbagatai. Cartridges — Norma Oryx 10.7 grams with an expanding bullet, providing a guaranteed stopping effect on boar and goat. The Tikka is more convenient for high-altitude traverses, the Sauer is more accurate at distances up to 400 meters — when booking, the choice of model should be based on the terrain and game species, not personal preference.

Transport and Accommodation: How We Get There and Where We Stay

Transfer from Almaty to the grounds — by Toyota Land Cruiser 200 or UAZ Patriot, depending on the road; accommodation — in hunting lodges with wood stove heating or tent camps. To the base in the Ili floodplain (wild boar hunting), the Land Cruiser 200 takes 2.5 hours on asphalt, and to the camp in the Tuyuk-Su tract (goat) — another hour on a rocky serpentine road, requiring four-wheel drive and 230 mm of ground clearance. The lodges have electricity from a generator from 18:00 to 23:00 and hot water from a titanium column, bunk beds with mattresses, and a cauldron for cooking the trophy. In tent camps — only a potbelly stove and camp beds: for winter hunting, bring a sleeping bag with a comfort temperature down to -15 °C, otherwise a night in the mountains will turn into a struggle for warmth instead of rest before the morning departure.

Personal Equipment: What You Must Bring

  • Hiking boots: high ankle support protects the ankle on scree — sneakers fall apart in one day on the Tien Shan slopes.
  • Waterproof suit: a membrane of 10,000 mm is mandatory — in the Ili floodplain after rain, the grass is wet up to the waist, and wet clothing in the wind disrupts your aim.
  • Thermal underwear: merino wool or synthetic — cotton gets wet from sweat on the ascent and freezes during breaks.
  • Headlamp: departure before dawn at 5:30 AM — without a flashlight, you won't find the blind or load the rifle in the dark.
  • First aid kit: CAT tourniquet, bandage, plaster — the nearest paramedic in the mountains is at least 2 hours away by car.

How to Legally Export a Trophy from Kazakhstan: Documents and Taxidermy

A successful hunt is only half the battle. The other half is legally exporting the trophy home. Let's go step by step through the required documents and where to get the mount made.

Documents for Trophy Export: Step-by-Step Instructions

To export a trophy from Kazakhstan, three documents are needed: the shooting license with the ranger's mark, a veterinary certificate, and an export permit from the Forestry Committee. You receive the license with the ranger's signature on-site — this confirms that the hunt was conducted legally and in the specified grounds. A veterinary certificate form No. 1 is issued in Almaty at the territorial department of the Veterinary Control Committee: you bring the trophy (skin, skull, horns) and an application — the result is ready in one day, the service is free. The export permit is submitted via eGov.kz or in person to the Forestry and Wildlife Committee, processing time is 5–7 working days, state fee 5,000 KZT. Before submitting documents, photograph the trophy with a tape measure (horn measurements according to SCI method) — customs sometimes requests photo evidence for verification with the CITES certificate.

Taxidermy in Almaty: Where to Get a Mount Made and How Much It Costs

There are 4–5 certified taxidermists in the city; the cost of a mountain goat head mount is from 50,000 KZT, a full-body mount from 150,000 KZT, production time 2–4 months. Well-known masters: Dmitry Vorobyov (Atakent area, makes mounts for 15 years, 3-year warranty on seams) and the taxidermy workshop "Kainar" (Zhetysu-3 microdistrict, specializes in ungulates). The price depends on complexity: a tau-teke head with horns — 50,000–70,000 KZT, a full argali body with a pedestal — from 200,000 KZT, a wild boar mount in a standing pose — from 180,000 KZT. All masters require a skin without cuts on the belly (remove it "stocking-style" on the spot) and a skull with horns separately — if the skin is torn, the price increases by 30–40%. Before sending the skin and horns to the taxidermist, they need to be salted or frozen — hunting lodges have freezers for temporary trophy storage.

What Cannot Be Exported: Prohibited Trophies

Export of trophies of species listed in the Red Book of Kazakhstan is prohibited — for example, snow leopard, manul, and some subspecies of argali. The snow leopard (irbis) is under an absolute ban, even if accidentally taken — a fine of up to 1,000 MCI and criminal liability. The manul and caracal are also in the Red Book; their skins and mounts are confiscated at the border. Among ungulates, the Tien Shan brown bear (licensed species, export only with CITES) and certain argali populations in the Tarbagatai ridges are restricted — before ordering a tour, check the status of the specific subspecies with the ranger. Even if the hunt was legal, border officials may require a genetic examination — analysis of hair or tissue confirms the species and excludes substitution of a protected species.

Hunting Safety and Common Beginner Mistakes

Hunting in the mountains and steppe is an activity with risks. Let's break down the main safety rules and typical mistakes beginners make in Kazakhstan.

Safety Rules: What to Do in an Emergency

In each tour, participants receive an Iridium satellite phone (cellular service does not work above 2500 m in the Tien Shan mountains), a first aid kit with a CAT Gen7 tourniquet and bandages, and undergo a briefing on behavior when encountering a bear, wild boar, or snow leopard. For emergency evacuation, we insure each participant for 500,000 tenge covering altitude sickness, fractures, and gunshot wounds — the policy is valid from departure from Almaty until return. If you get lost in the steppe or mountains, first assess visibility: in clear weather, climb to an open high point and signal with the satellite phone — the search group with a DJI Mavic Thermal drone deploys within 30 minutes. The main rule when encountering a bear is not to run and not to make eye contact: slowly back away without making sudden movements. In 90% of cases, the animal leaves on its own.

5 Common Mistakes of Beginner Hunters in Kazakhstan

  • Ignoring acclimatization: going for mountain goat at 3000 m without adaptation leads to altitude sickness and tour cancellation — allow at least a day for acclimatization in the Alma-Arasan gorge.
  • Not knowing seasonal restrictions: shooting wild boar from May to August is only allowed for males, and shooting a female with offspring is punishable by a fine of up to 100 MCI — check the animal's status with the guide.
  • Neglecting camouflage: bright clothing and loud conversation scare argali away from 500 m — use Realtree or Mossy Oak camouflage and move against the wind.
  • Shooting without zeroing: the Tikka and Sauer rifles in the tours are zeroed at 100 m, but in the mountains the distance to the trophy can reach 250–300 m — ask the guide to check the adjustments on site.
  • Saving on insurance: basic insurance does not cover helicopter evacuation from hard-to-reach areas like the Kungey Alatau ridge — a 15% surcharge on the tour cost covers these risks.

Why It's Safer with a Certified Guide: toor's Experience

All our guides are certified specialists with at least 5 years of experience in the mountains of Kazakhstan, who have passed annual first aid certification (WFR standard — Wilderness First Responder) and know the behavior of each animal species: from argali migration routes to the wolf's reaction to a shot. In October, we had an incident: a group of three wild boar hunters in the Ili River floodplain got caught in fog with 15-meter visibility — guide Aidos Serikov decided to set up camp and wait for clearing instead of navigating by GPS, which prevented them from heading towards a swamp with muddy banks. The guide doesn't just lead to the trophy — he assesses the weather, avalanche danger, and the group's condition, making the decision to return if conditions become risky.

Conclusion

A hunting trip in Kazakhstan from Almaty means mountains, steppes, six species of permitted game, and precise season dates, but without preparation, the trip will fail due to documents or logistics.

Key Takeaways

  • Check your documents: weapons permit, shooting license, visa, and insurance — without them, the trip is illegal, and fines can reach 200 MCI (738,400 KZT).
  • Choose the season for your trophy: mountain goat — in autumn (September–November), wild boar — year-round, wolf — in winter (December–February), argali — August–October.
  • Consider export logistics: the trophy needs to be microchipped by a veterinarian, a CITES permit processed (up to 30 days), and a sanitary certificate obtained — without these, customs will not allow the horns or skin through.
  • Don't neglect safety: satellite communication (InReach or Thuraya), a mountain first aid kit with dexamethasone for pulmonary edema, and 2–3 days of acclimatization before a high-altitude trip for argali are mandatory.
  • Plan your budget with a buffer: add 20–30% to the tour cost for taxidermy, shipping, and unforeseen expenses — for example, downtime due to weather in the Tien Shan mountains.
