Tour to Ukok Plateau from Almaty: route, prices, and what you need to know before the trip

Tour to the Ukok Plateau from Almaty by toor is a 4-day journey to a UNESCO World Heritage site at an altitude of 2200–3000 meters. We provide transfer by UAZ-452 or Toyota Land Cruiser 80, tent accommodation, 3 meals a day, and border zone permit processing. Difficulty is moderate, suitable for beginners with good physical fitness.

Tour cost to the Ukok Plateau: what the price includes

Let's break down what the trip to the Ukok Plateau consists of and the services included, so you understand what you're paying for and why prices differ among operators.

What is included in the cost of the trip to the Ukok Plateau

  • Transfer from Almaty to Ust-Kan and back: travel by SUV (UAZ-452 or Toyota Land Cruiser 80) takes 6–7 hours one way, all mileage included in the base price of toor.
  • Accommodation in tents and three hot meals a day: two-person tents are set up at the foot of the Pazyryk burial mounds, cooking over a campfire — soups, porridge, meat, tea, coffee, plus dry rations for daytime hikes.
  • Border zone permit processing and participant insurance: documents are submitted two weeks before departure; participants only provide a copy of their ID, the guide picks up the ready permits at the border service in Ust-Kan.
  • Certified guide services and equipment: a local guide with a satellite phone knows the route and border zone rules; sleeping bags and trekking poles are provided at the start at no extra charge.

Why the price for the trip may differ among operators

The difference in the price for a trip to the Ukok Plateau is usually related to what is included in the basic package: some include transfer and meals, others only guide services, while permit and insurance are offered for an additional fee. An intermediary operator adds a commission of 15–25% on top without handling logistics — they simply pass the request to a local driver or guide in Ust-Kan. Trips from direct Almaty operators are more expensive upfront but eliminate surprises: you pay once and get a full cycle — from meeting in the city to returning. In my opinion, a cheap offer from an unknown private individual often results in a lack of insurance and border permits, and on the plateau, this is a direct risk. Always check whether the border zone permit is included — it is a mandatory document, and obtaining it independently can take up to several weeks.

How to check the current price and book the trip

The current cost of a trip to the Ukok Plateau from Almaty can be clarified via WhatsApp — our managers will promptly answer questions and help choose convenient dates. The excursion to the Ukok Plateau from Almaty includes transfer, meals, accommodation, and processing of all documents. The price depends on the season (July-August is peak, booking should be a month in advance), group size (up to 6 people in a shared group, up to 4 in a private group), and additional options like drone rental. Booking via WhatsApp allows you to immediately coordinate all details: group size, departure dates, and individual preferences for the route.

Border zone permit: how we handle the documents

The Ukok Plateau is located in a border zone, so a special permit is required for visiting. Here's how we take care of this for you.

Why a permit to visit the Ukok Plateau is needed and who issues it

The Ukok Plateau is located in a border zone at the junction of Kazakhstan, Russia, China, and Mongolia. A tour to Ukok from Kazakhstan is a route that starts in Almaty and passes through the East Kazakhstan region. Therefore, a permit from the Border Service of the National Security Committee of the Republic of Kazakhstan is required — this is not a visa, but a special pass to stay in a restricted area. The plateau's territory belongs to the Ust-Kan district of the East Kazakhstan region, where a special access regime applies: any entry is controlled through the Ust-Kan checkpoint. The application is submitted to the territorial border service unit with exact dates, route, and group composition — without this document, you simply will not be allowed through. Obtaining it independently requires a personal visit to the office in Ust-Kamenogorsk or Almaty with the original ID and takes up to 30 days — a waste of time and money on transfer if refused.

How we process the permit: deadlines and documents

  • Copy of ID: the only thing needed from you — a scan or photo of the page with your details; we collect the rest.
  • Submission deadline: we send the package to the Border Service 2–3 weeks before departure — the standard window for processing applications.
  • Electronic approval: the permit arrives digitally to the guide's email; no need to print it — just show it on your phone at the checkpoint.
  • Pre-departure check: the day before the start, we call each participant and confirm that the pass is ready — no force majeure on site.

Can you fly a drone on the Ukok Plateau

Photo and video shooting on the Ukok Plateau is allowed, but drone flights require prior coordination with our guide, as this is a border zone with special rules. Tourists from Almaty with a Mavic Mini are often surprised that even a compact quadcopter is subject to a ban without permission — aerial photography is considered aerial surveillance of a restricted facility. If you plan to shoot from the air, let us know in advance — we will coordinate this with the border service to avoid problems on site.

Equipment for the tour to the Ukok Plateau: what to bring and what we provide for free

Proper equipment is the key to comfort and safety on the Ukok Plateau. Here's what you must bring and what we provide for free.

What we provide for free: sleeping bag and trekking poles

The cost of the trip to the Ukok Plateau includes free rental of a sleeping bag and trekking poles — basic equipment that we give to each participant before departure. The sleeping bag is rated for comfort down to +5°C: on the plateau, summer nights drop to +8…+10°C, so you won't freeze. The poles are telescopic aluminum, adjustable to your height: shorten them on ascents, lengthen them on descents to relieve your knees. The sleeping bag is designed for temperatures down to +5°C, which is optimal for overnight stays on the plateau in summer, and the poles reduce knee strain when navigating elevation changes of up to 300 meters per day.

Complete list of personal equipment for the trip to the Ukok Plateau

  • Trekking boots with high ankles: protect the ankle on rocky trails — low-top sneakers are unsuitable here, you can easily twist your ankle.
  • Windproof jacket and warm fleece: daytime on the plateau is +20°C, but the wind is piercing, and by evening the temperature drops to +5°C.
  • Thermal underwear: must be worn underneath — wicks moisture while walking and retains heat during breaks; cotton is unsuitable.
  • Raincoat (poncho or membrane jacket): at 3000 m, weather changes within 20 minutes — clear skies turn into rain with hail.
  • Sunglasses and SPF 50+ sunscreen: UV is very active at altitude; even on a cloudy day, you can burn your cornea and skin.
  • Trekking poles: reduce knee strain when navigating elevation changes of up to 300 meters per day — essential for participants with joint issues.

Meals on the trip: what we cook and whether you need to bring your own food

On the trip to the Ukok Plateau, toor provides 3 hot meals a day: breakfast, lunch, and dinner, plus snacks, tea, and coffee throughout the day — you don't need to bring your own food unless you have special dietary preferences. The menu is designed with high physical activity in mind: breakfast — porridge (oatmeal, buckwheat) with dried fruit and nuts; lunch — soups (chicken, cheese) with bread and lard; dinner — meat dishes (stewed beef with potatoes, pilaf) plus vegetable platters. Snacks during the day — nuts, dried fruit, cookies, chocolate — are available in a common area; everyone takes as needed. During breaks, the guide brews tea (black, green, herbal) and makes coffee — thermoses with boiling water are always on hand. The menu is designed with high physical activity in mind: porridge, soups, meat dishes, vegetables, and fruits — to replenish energy after hiking across the plateau.

Safety on the route: communication, first aid kit, and emergency procedures

Lack of communication and the remoteness of the plateau are the main fears of tourists. Here's how we ensure safety throughout the route.

Communication on the Ukok Plateau: why there is no internet and how we solve this problem

On the Ukok Plateau, cellular communication and the internet are completely absent — it is one of the most remote points in Kazakhstan, so our guide always has a satellite phone for emergency contact with the outside world. Mobile operators (Kcell, Tele2, Beeline) only work in the Ust-Kan area and on the approach to the plateau; at 2500 m, the signal disappears entirely. The satellite device operates via the Iridium system, which covers the entire Ukok area regardless of weather or time of day. Moreover, the toor guide checks the charge and functionality of the phone every morning before heading out. A satellite phone is not a luxury but a mandatory piece of equipment for trips to such places: it allows you to call for help in case of injury, sudden weather changes, or other unforeseen situations.

First aid kit and actions in case of injury on the route

The toor guide always has a first aid kit with wound treatment supplies, painkillers, motion sickness and allergy remedies, as well as a tourniquet and splint for fracture stabilization — everything needed to stabilize a condition until evacuation. In addition to the standard kit, during cold seasons, hand warmers and thermal blankets are added to prevent hypothermia during prolonged waiting. Almaty routes on Ukok, unlike the hiking trails of the neighboring Bertek plateau, have short hiking distances (3–5 km), which reduces the risk of sprains and dislocations. In case of a serious injury, the guide contacts the coordinator in Almaty via satellite phone, who arranges evacuation — the nearest medical facility is in Ust-Kan, 6–7 hours away.

Participant insurance and trip cancellation

  • Accident insurance: each participant of the trip to the Ukok Plateau is insured for the entire route — the policy covers medical expenses, evacuation from the plateau, and transport to the hospital.
  • Free cancellation 7 days in advance: if plans change a week before departure, full refund without penalties — the money is returned to your card within 1–2 business days.
  • Partial refund for late cancellation: if you cancel later than 7 days, we refund 50% of the amount — this covers the costs of booking permits and equipment.
  • Insurance for private groups: for private trips (up to 4 people), toor provides the same policy without extra charges for small groups.
  • What is not covered by insurance: intentional injuries, alcohol intoxication, and chronic exacerbations — these cases require separate coverage from the tourist.

Route and logistics: how the tour to the Ukok Plateau goes

Here's how the trip to the Ukok Plateau is organized day by day: from departure from Almaty to return, so you have an idea of the Ukok plateau route and schedule.

Day 1: Departure and transfer to Ust-Kan

On the first day, we depart in the morning by UAZ-452 or Toyota Land Cruiser 80. A jeep tour to Ukok from Almaty is a ride in prepared SUVs with an experienced driver. In 6–7 hours, we reach the village of Ust-Kan, where we stop for lunch and a final equipment check before ascending to the plateau. The road passes through the Kaskelen Pass and the Chui Valley — the landscape changes from foothills to steppe, and after the turn to Ust-Kan, a gravel road with serpentines begins. Lunch is at a roadside cafe in the village of Karakol: beshbarmak and kuurdak; for vegetarians, lagman without meat upon prior request. The UAZ-452 is used for July trips when the road is washed out after rains — its off-road capability is higher, while the Toyota Land Cruiser 80 with air conditioning is used in dry August for comfort during the long transfer. Before departure, check the weather at the Kaskelen Pass: if it rained at night, the UAZ-452 will pass the washed-out section, while the Toyota may get stuck.

Days 2–3: Life on the plateau — hiking and overnight camping

On the second and third days, we set up a base camp in tents on the plateau and make hiking trips of 3–5 km per day with elevation changes of up to 300 meters — enough to explore the key attractions without overexertion. The route includes an ascent to the burial mound of the "Ukok Princess," a walk around Lake Kaljin-Kol, and a hike to a viewpoint over the Argut Valley — we allocate 2–3 hours for each site with breaks. Meals are three hot meals a day cooked on MSR WhisperLite Universal stoves: breakfast — porridge or scrambled eggs with flatbread; lunch — stew soup with potatoes; dinner — navy-style pasta or pilaf. During the day on the plateau, it is +20…+25°C, so you can walk in trekking pants and a T-shirt, but by evening the wind picks up — without a windbreaker and fleece, it gets chilly. At night, the temperature drops to +5…+10°C, so a sleeping bag and warm clothes are mandatory: even in July, don't expect a summer night in the tent.

Day 4: Return

On the fourth day, we pack up the camp, descend from the plateau, and drive back — arriving in the city in the evening, with time to rest after the trip. The return transfer takes the same 6–7 hours, but without lunch stops: the guide provides a dry ration with sandwiches and fruit to avoid wasting time at cafes. The four-day format is the optimal balance: you have time to acclimatize, explore the main locations, and not overload your body with a prolonged stay at altitude.

Ukok Plateau: what to see and what impressions await you

The Ukok Plateau is not just about the Pazyryk burial mounds. Here's what to see on the Ukok Plateau and what surprises this unique location holds. A tour to the Ukok Plateau in Altai is an opportunity to see unique natural and archaeological sites in one trip.

Pazyryk burial mounds and the "Ukok Princess": what and where

The main archaeological attraction of Ukok is the Pazyryk burial mounds, Scythian burials from the 5th–3rd centuries BC, the most famous of which is the site of the discovery of the "Ukok Princess" — a mummified woman with tattoos, found in 1993 by Novosibirsk archaeologists led by Natalia Polosmak. Stone mounds 20–40 meters in diameter are scattered throughout the area, with the densest concentration in the Bertek tract near the river of the same name, where in mound No. 1 of the Ak-Alakha-3 burial ground, the body with deer tattoos on the shoulders and wrists was preserved in an ice lens. Currently, the mummy is kept in the National Museum of the Altai Republic in Gorno-Altaysk, and a memorial sign has been erected at the excavation site — some mounds reach 2–3 meters in height, and you stand on a 2500-year-old grave. When planning the route, check with the guide which mounds are accessible for viewing — some are in a strictly protected area, and without coordination with the border service, you cannot approach them.

Wildlife of the plateau: what animals you might encounter

On Ukok, you can encounter argali (mountain sheep), Siberian ibex, and marmots — these animals are not afraid of humans but keep their distance, so for good shots, you should bring a zoom lens with a focal length of at least 200 mm. Argali from the Red Book graze in herds of 10–30 individuals on the southern slopes of the Sailugem ridge, Siberian ibex are found near rocky cliffs in the Dzhazator River valley, and tarbagan marmots come out of their burrows at +15°C and stand upright when approached, whistling across the steppe. Among birds, golden eagles, steppe eagles, and Altai snowcocks — mountain turkeys — nest near watering holes, and in the morning hours in the Kalguty Valley, the chance of seeing argali is over 70%, so guides usually allocate 20–30 minutes for a stop there. The best time for observation is early morning or evening when animals graze; during the day, they hide from the sun in the rocks — this should be considered when planning daytime hikes.

Weather on the Ukok Plateau in summer: what you need to know

In summer on Ukok, daytime temperatures are +20…+25°C, nighttime +5…+10°C; rain is possible at any time, especially in June and late August, while July-August are considered the driest months. Due to the altitude of 2200–2600 meters, UV is 30–40% more intense than in Almaty, so SPF 50+ is mandatory even in cloudy weather — skin burns within an hour, and wind in the open steppe at 10–15 m/s significantly lowers the perceived temperature by 5–7 degrees. Air humidity is about 40–50%, causing skin and mucous membranes to dry out quickly, especially for those unaccustomed to mountain climates, and clear skies can turn into fog and rain within 15–20 minutes. A windproof jacket and raincoat should be at hand, even if the sun is shining in the morning — local guides recommend keeping them in your backpack, not in the car trunk, so you don't have to run 200 meters under a downpour.

Common mistakes tourists make on the Ukok Plateau and how to avoid them

Over the years of work, we have seen the same mistakes made by travelers visiting the Ukok Plateau for the first time. We have compiled the main ones so you don't repeat them.

Mistake 1: Wrong footwear and clothing

The most common mistake is arriving in low-top sneakers without a windproof jacket: on rocky trails, you can easily twist your ankle, and sudden rain or wind at 3000 meters can lead to hypothermia even in summer. Participants come in ordinary sports sneakers, thinking the weather on Ukok is the same as in Almaty, but the difference is significant: at 2200–3000 m, nighttime temperatures drop to +5°C, and wind gusts can reach 15–20 m/s. Trekking boots with high ankles are not just a recommendation but a mandatory requirement for the trip, and we inform all participants a week before departure so they have time to buy or rent suitable footwear.

Mistake 2: Ignoring acclimatization and physical fitness

Many tourists underestimate the altitude of Ukok (2200–3000 m) and try to cover as much of the route as possible on the first day, leading to headaches, nausea, and rapid fatigue due to altitude sickness. The body needs 24–48 hours to adapt to the thin air, and without breaks for acclimatization, even a physically strong person can lose strength by lunchtime. Our route is designed with acclimatization in mind: on the first day on the plateau, we take short hikes to let the body adjust to the altitude, and only on the second day do we increase the load — this approach allows us to cover all planned points without setbacks.

Mistake 3: Independent trip without preparation

An independent trip to Ukok without experience risks not getting a border zone permit, getting stuck on the unpaved road in a regular car, or getting lost on the route without communication, while a guided trip solves all these problems for you. The road from Ust-Kan to the plateau requires a four-wheel-drive SUV with high ground clearance — a sedan or crossover simply cannot handle the rocky passes and fords. We see travelers who come to Ukok independently and after a few hours realize they are not ready for an unprepared overnight camping — in such cases, toor helps with accommodation, but it is better not to risk it and immediately choose an organized tour to the Ukok Plateau from Almaty, where logistics, permits, and equipment are already taken care of for you.

Conclusion

We have covered the key points that will help you plan your trip to Ukok and avoid typical mistakes.

Main takeaways

  • Border zone permit — a mandatory document that is processed 30–45 days through an accredited tour operator; independent submission to the FSB is rejected without local registration in the Altai Republic.
  • Equipment — tent, sleeping bag, warm clothing, and food supplies for all days; wind on the plateau reaches 30 m/s, so a cheap Chinese tent cannot withstand the first night at 2600 m.
  • Acclimatization — the altitude of Ukok (2200–3000 m) requires a gradual ascent and rest on the first day; a rapid ascent above 2500 m threatens headaches in 40% of tourists without adaptation.
  • Communication — mobile internet is absent along the entire route, so a satellite phone is the only way to call for help; without it, any accident turns evacuation into a multi-hour operation.
  • Best format — an organized trip with a guide who handles logistics, permits, and safety; the cost of such a trip to Ukok starts from 350,000 tenge per person and includes transfer, meals, tents, and a guide.
